National Reserve Grade

I think thats ridiculous though. The only team really adversely affected are the Backhawks, whom at present are the equivalent of a person on steroids with their cowboys players being churned over through them. They have an unnatural advantage. The Blackhawks have been in the QRL a whole 5 minutes, and they want to hold up the whole Rugby league for just them? far out.

Besides, On the whole, What are they changing?

QLD have THREE teams in the NRL. A fair chunk of those players are being drawn from NZ,NSW and if the trend continues, a splash of english.

Only 5o players will get drawn from the QLD Cup. to play a better standard. Only around 35 will come directly from QLD Cup.

In return, QLD can very much run their own show as a third tier level.

How can a comp with places such as Reclifffe and Burleigh lay claim to being the direct feeder to the NRL? These are small places and shouldnt be feeding directly into the Broncos. These places are NSWs equivalent populations of Burwood/Concord and Blacktown, and guess what tier those two suburbs field teams in?

There are some valid points here, aside from the suburb rant at the end (you know, since suburbs like Canterbury and Cronulla field NRL teams...)

IF a straight up NRL Reserve grade comp superceded the QLD Cup, how much would the QLD Cup actually lose? 54 players a week, to be exact. It would be a decent hit to the quality. Food for thought though. Personally I don't think it would be worth it.

What do we gain from having a full NRL Reserve Grade comp?

One of the big issues will be the playing strength difference between sides with an NRL feeder arrangement and those without. Naturally the clubs with direct pathway to NRL and fielding NRL non starters will be much much stronger.

This is currently the case in QLD Cup and they seem happy with it and convinced they are of a much higher standard than NSW Cup.

Here's a compromise that keeps the existing structures and clubs intact, and provides a vehicle for expansion and better pathways in non-heartland areas.
Basic premise is that NSW Cup + QLD Cup become conferences under 1 competition.

So basically an expansion of the State Championship??

Sounds good...

Correct me if i am wrong but at current, the QRL have four teams that feed into the NRL and the rest dont, how is that right?

Third tier! has to be! its logic.

You are wrong.

Only 1 club in QCup does not have an arrangement with a NRL club and that is the PNG Hunters.

I would like to see a separate NZ conference included and regional teams from locations that will never get their own NRL team given a shot...

Ok, you are probably correct. However that means mathematically that a team has a couple of feeders. Blackhawks have one?

1. strength of reserve grade
2. A logical progressional model
3 more bang for your back on gameday (like it used to be?)
4opportunity. players can be exposed to professionalism moreso than now. it could also allow us to take a chance on south africans or fijians etc

Im pretty sure that when i saw a teamlist last year of the BHs then it was pretty much a Cowboys whos who.

That said, fair enough on the associations list you listed. I believe you.

However,

I read that as 5,2,2 and 2.

So the broncos, who already have every other systemic advantage their way, have a pool of 2.5x more than the next team.

That isnt right.

that is so unfair.

This is the key question.

And the answer is...not much.

The other key questions are:

1. What would we lose as a result of it?
And
2. Is it worth it?

The answers to those are:

1. A proper home and away Qld Cup that currently works really well, a hell of a lot of money and potentially some clubs that can't handle it.
And
3. No.

i know, brisbane are really getting a raw deal there

as sarcastic as that was you would hear that come from a proper brisbane wankers mouth somewhere
Not really because they actually don't have the talent pool of all those clubs to draw on they can only draw on their nrl contracted players. That is limited by 2nd tier salary cap which would be the same for all teams. It's probably a disadvantage having your player pool spread out as each feeder team would have different systems to the nrl team where as teams with one feeder would coach the same systems. I prefer the idea of distinct reserve or feeder team but it would definitely impact the qrl comp.

I think the point to be made there - the advantage is in the fact they have a wider talent pool to draw from when it comes to signing players to NRL contracts, and a wider pool for the 2nd tier cap.

To suggest there's no advantage isn't exactly right.

To be fair, this could be split into 3 separate issues.

1 - Melbourne and Canberra playing locally based 2nd division teams, creating a vital semi-professional pathway between local leagues and reps to top grade in Victoria and ACT-Country NSW and increasing the amount of high level rugby league played in those regions.
2 - Using 2nd Division as a vehicle for expansion and pathways into Perth, NZ South Island, and the Pacific Islands.
3 - A nationally unified 2nd Division.

The 3rd is probably the least important. I do think it would create and more vibrant, profitable and higher quality competition - better together than divided. But it isn't as necessary as points 1 and 2 and has a lot of opposition.

Halve the number of Sydney teams, introduce more satellite teams . . . then experiment all you like,
