I heard something a few weeks ago but nothing since. I didn't pay it much attention as it makes no sense for us to trade him after re-signing JJ to that mammoth contract and committing to this same group of players. Having said that, with the Atlanta brains-trust, anything is possible.

If we were to get Chris Paul back for him, then I can live with it. A trade of Chris Paul & Okaford for Smith, Jamal Crawford (expiring) & Mo Evans (expiring) looks good. Hornets get out from Okafor's deal whilst getting a stud back for Paul. Meanwhile Hawks field a starting 5 of Paul-JJ-Williams-Horford-Okafor with Zaza-Bibby-Teague-Crawford off the bench. A big man short but we always are.

Thoughts on JJ's contract (be warned this is long and I think I needed to get all my thoughts down on the deal just for my own sake):

I wanted to trade JJ before the deadline last season as I knew we would overpay for a player that is both overrated (he is NOT a franchise guy) and hasn’t really changed from the player he was when we first signed him – his numbers pretty much across the board are some of the most consistent year to year you’ll find, on a per game and efficiency basis. Whilst that’s great for what we have been paying him (getting value for money over the last 5 years), it’s not a great basis on which to agree to pay him another $123m, especially considering he’s never been considered a top 10 guy with his existing production.

Dig a little deeper into his numbers though and pretty much every stat that is closely or somewhat related to a player’s athleticism (blocks, free throw rate etc) declined last year, indicating that he’s starting to lose what little athleticism he had to begin with. This is further bad news to think about when we’ve committed to him for another next 6 years. He won’t suddenly gain a quick first step after he turns 30. I don’t expect his numbers to drop precipitously next year, but by year 3 onwards I’d be surprised if he’s better than just an average NBA player.

Having said that though there are two things that I believe will help him remain valuable (in some capacity) going forward – he’s 6’8” (huge for a shooting guard) and he can shoot. Being the focal point for the last 5 years (not to mention Woodson’s iso-heavy offence and his aforementioned poor athleticism) he’s not been a terribly efficient shooter, but he shot 48% on 3s on the 2005 Suns and there’s no reason to think he couldn’t shoot above 40% being a second or third option even 6 years from now, feasting on someone else’s double team attention. Of course, you want a little more than mid-40% shooting from a guy you’re paying $20m a year to, but I digress.

What has given me some cause for optimism towards JJ in the last couple of weeks is what I'm reading about new coach Larry Drew's offensive scheme. There’s a few articles floating around (if you’re really interested, check out the Atlanta Journal-Constitution, or AJC.com), but in short it sounds as though it will be constant ball movement and minimal isolation plays. This should be good for JJ from an efficiency stand-point, and will probably help the numbers of Smith, Horford & Williams on a per game basis as they figure to get more touches, but how that translates to on-court success is anyone’s guess at this time. We were already a decent offensive team (albeit an unattractive one) so I’d hazard a guess we needed to focus on improving elsewhere (*cough* defence *cough*) to really take a step forward. Perhaps the emergence of Jeff Teague will help on that front, as he looks set to take minutes away from Bibby and is already a superior defender to Bibby & arguably JJ.

The bottom line though is we were caught between a rock and a hard place – lose JJ for nothing and it’s possible we don’t make the play-offs next year, jeopardising Horford’s willingness to sign an extension. Keep him though and we had to cough up the money. I want to talk myself into believing Jamal Crawford, Jeff Teague & Jordan Crawford could have made up JJ’s output next year had we lost him, but it’s a pretty big leap. JJ might not be a stud, but he’s still a pretty handy player.

In other news, there's plenty of talk out there about Melo not signing his extension with Denver and wanting to play for the Knicks. This is a horrible situation for Denver - Denver would want quality assets back in any trade if it gets to that stage (picks, good young players, cap relief etc) but which team would want to give up any of those things if they're also going to lose him after this season? Best outcome for all is Melo agreeing to the extension and then a trade is worked out between Denver & NY. Something like Anthony Randolph, a pick & the expiring Azuibuike & Curry contracts. Denver get a little cap relief after this year, a nice young player and a future pick, all while remaining competitive this year. Knicks get Melo and can look to clear cap room for Chris Paul in the summer of 2012 for their own big 3.

If a S&T were to happen at the end of the season, I'd imagine Denver would want Gallinari, although as we saw with the Lebron and Bosh S&T's, the team giving up the superstar has little leverage if the team it's trading with has significant cap space.

If a team were to trade for Melo during the season, as you said Tiger, the only way it could work is if Melo agreed to sign an extension before the trade was made. The main reason no one traded for Amarie during the past season was because of the mentioned uncertainty of whether he would stay or not after season's end.

MADRID, Spain -- Rudy Fernandez is not returning calls from Portland Trail Blazers coach Nate McMillan, and was fined $25,000 by the NBA on Thursday for "public statements detrimental to the NBA."

With Team USA set to play Fernandez and the Spanish national team Sunday night, the latest developments regarding the disgruntled Fernandez and the trade speculation surrounding Carmelo Anthony added two more subplots to an NBA offseason that refuses to take a holiday.

"I've tried to contact Rudy, and he hasn't returned calls [since the season ended]," McMillan told ESPN.com. "So we'll just have to see what happens. We're looking to improve our team at all times, but I don't know what's going to happen."

Fernandez's agent, Andy Miller, told several news outlets that Fernandez will not report to training camp and is willing to sit out the next two seasons if the Blazers refuse to trade his client.

NBA spokesman Tim Frank said the league was investigating Miller's and Fernandez's comments and whether they violated league rules that prohibit players from publicly requesting a trade.

Complain all he wants, he's under contract for at least another season with Portland (Blazers have team option for 2nd year). I'd imagine that if the Blazers did permit him a release to return to Europe, they would include a clause which banned him from playing in the NBA for the length of his current contract.

Carmelo open to multiyear deal with Rockets or Nets

Should the Denver Nuggets elect to trade Carmelo Anthony, the New York Knicks are believed to be the All-Star forward's first choice for a new home. But they are not his only option.
Multiple league sources familiar with his situation told SI.com that Anthony would also be open to signing a long-term deal with Houston or New Jersey should either of those teams offer the Nuggets an acceptable trade package.
Getting Anthony, 26, to agree to an extension is the key to any deal as he can become a free agent after the 2010-11 season. Denver has offered Anthony a three-year, $65 million extension, but he has balked at signing it and is reportedly looking for a way out. Because acquiring Anthony would require a substantial offer, it is highly unlikely any team would risk making a trade without having Anthony agree to a simultaneous extension.
While resolving Anthony's situation is a priority in Denver, there is no urgency to make a deal quickly. The Denver Post reported in June that the Nuggets were prepared to trade Anthony rather than watch him opt out of his contract next summer. However, the Nuggets are without a general manager after they let go of top basketball executives Mark Warkentien and Rex Chapman.
Former Suns executive David Griffin is believed to be the top candidate to run the basketball operations, but a league source said the Nuggets were still interviewing candidates.

Devin Harris, Derrick Favors and a future first round pick for Melo (providing he signs an extension). Who says no first?

Or, since the Nuggets already have 2 PG's

Favors, Outlaw, Morrow and two future first round picks for Melo.

Second one makes more sense from a positional stand point.

Remember this great story?

NEW YORK -- Free-agent guard Delonte West has been suspended without pay for 10 games after pleading guilty last month to weapons charges.

West

Maryland authorities said he was carrying two loaded handguns, a loaded shotgun and an 8½-inch Bowie knife while speeding on a three-wheel motorcycle on the Capital Beltway last September.

West played for the Cleveland Cavaliers last season. The Minnesota Timberwolves waived him Aug. 3 after acquiring West in a trade.

West received a home detention sentence that includes flexibility to travel to games. The league said Friday that if he signs with a team, his suspension would begin with the first game of the regular season for which he is eligible and physically able to play.

The 27-year-old West has averaged 9.9 points in six NBA seasons. He has battled bipolar disorder during his career.

From one great story to another. Bit old

ATHENS, Greece -- Serbia's Nenad Krstic, a center for the Oklahoma City Thunder, was released Friday after being held in police custody overnight following a chaotic brawl during a match with Greece.

The fight broke out during the last game of the Acropolis tournament, which was abandoned with 2:40 remaining and Greece leading by one point. The incident occurred just a week before the basketball world championship in Turkey, where both teams will play.

"This shouldn't have happened," said Serb coach Dusan Ivkovic, who is due to take over Greek club Olympiakos next season. "Relations with the Greeks are now very bad."

A stunned crowd of about 5,000 at the Athens Olympic Arena watched players from both teams exchange punches and kicks on the floor and in the tunnels leading to the dressing rooms. Two or three spectators entered the fray but were quickly shoved out of the arena.

The fight began when Greece forward Antonis Fotsis moved threateningly against Serbia guard Milos Teodosic, who had fouled him. Krstic grabbed Fotsis by the throat and threw a chair toward Sofoklis Schortsanitis, who was pursuing him. The chair hit Yannis Bouroussis, who had not played because of a hand injury, and left him with a bloody wound on the side of his head.
“

I believe he acted in self-defense and grabbed a chair after some half-naked [Greek] fans rushed into the court. The chair fell from his hand and grazed Bouroussis.
” -- Serbian coach Dusan Ivkovic,
on Nenad Krstic's actions
The teams were finally separated after they had carried the fray off the court.
Prosecutor Costas Simitzoglou released Krstic pending an investigation into the brawl. Investigators from Greece's sports violence squad will examine video footage of the game and take statements from witnesses before deciding whether to bring charges.
Krstic returned to his hotel after being released and was due to leave Athens for Belgrade later on Friday. The rest of the Serbia team returned earlier.

"I don't know the rules, but I hope I won't be punished," Krstic told Serbian media. "An [act of] stupidity was committed, and I hope they will not punish us. The Greeks started the brawl, there were no guards and the [Greek] fans entered the court."

Chair fell from his hand

*does MJ fist pump*

To the surprise of countless NBA observers, Kwame Brown and Michael Jordan are together again.

A reunion that no one in the league expected after their well-chronicled difficulties in Washington will be taking place in Charlotte this season after Brown struck a one-year deal at the veteran minimum with the Jordan-owned Bobcats.

Mark Bartlestein, Brown's Chicago-based agent, told ESPN.com that the sides agreed to terms Monday after Brown played the past two seasons for the Detroit Pistons. As a nine-year veteran, Brown will earn $1.3 million next season. The 6-foot-11, 270-pound Brown appeared in 48 games last season, averaging 3.3 points and 3.7 minutes in 13.8 minutes per game.

"He really wanted to take the challenge of playing again for Michael and playing for a top coach like Larry Brown," Bartelstein said. "I think it says a lot about Kwame that he wanted to go to Charlotte.

"The last few years have been difficult for him, but I think he's really excited to go there and try to create a new chapter in his career. He wants this opportunity to go back and prove something."

Brown became in 2001 the first high schooler in league history to be drafted No. 1 overall when Jordan, as president of basketball operations for the Washington Wizards, used his first draft pick as an executive on the Georgia teenager.

But the gamble worked out disastrously for both, with Brown chafing under the pressure of not only being drafted by Jordan but playing alongside him as a teammate when Jordan unretired and began his final comeback as a player shortly before Brown's rookie season. With the drafting of Brown cited often as the prime misstep of what is generally regarded as an unsuccessful front-office tenure for Jordan, then-Wizards owner Abe Pollin abruptly cut ties with the future Hall of Famer after the 2002-03 season when Jordan hoped to return to his personnel role.

"Michael was very much a part of this," Bartelstein said of Jordan. "He wanted this to happen and he wanted to give Kwame another opportunity.

"There's been so much written about the fact that this was Michael's first pick [as an executive] and so much criticism directed at both of them when it didn't work out. When that happens you can do one of two things. You can run from all that or you can use it as motivation. What better way to try to turn your career around than to go back to where it all started?

"There were a lot of easier places Kwame could have gone, a lot of safer places. I think this says a lot about his competitive instinct and fire that he wanted to take on this challenge."

Kwame is a guilty pleasure of mine. I always pick him up to ride my bench in 2k games...

If Darko can still get paid maybe Brown can next year!
