The NBA won't release its 2010-11 schedule until Tuesday, but the Orlando Magic are expected to open the NBA regular season in their new arena against Dwyane Wade, LeBron James and the Miami Heat, Don Muret of Sports Business Journal reports.
The new $480 million Amway Center will hold 18,500 for basketball games. The arena will host the 2012 NBA All-Star Game.
The season-opening Heat-Magic game will be played on Thursday, Oct. 28, and broadcast on TNT.

Looks like Shaq will sign with the Celtics for the veterans minimum.

Interesting move. If ever there was a player that could upset the Celtics pecking order / chemistry, it's Shaq. Having said that, they definitely could use his size and he will provide a low post presence, which is something KG has been less and less of recently.

But with only a two year window as they're currently constructed, should they be jeopardising one year with this kind of signing?

KG, Shaq, Jermaine O'neal, Ray Allen, Paul Pierce. It's a reunion of the 2002 NBA Allstars! Now they just need to sign up T-Mac and A.I to bring it together.

It makes sense for Shaq to join the other old fogies(sp?)...

I hate it for the C's point of view as I think their window has already closed and don't seem them getting out of the 2nd round(unless they can dodge the heat and magic till the 3rd).

The Boston Celtics announced today that they have signed free agent center Shaquille O’Neal. Per team policy, terms of the deal were not disclosed. “It is not every day that you can add a player of Shaquille’s caliber to your team,” said Danny Ainge, Celtics President of Basketball Operations. “His past experience speaks for itself and we believe that he is a great fit for our roster.”
O’Neal, a 7’1” center, posted averages of 12.0 points, 6.7 rebounds, 1.2 blocks and shot 56.6% from the field last season in 53 games for the Cleveland Cavaliers.
“I am honored to be joining the Celtics,” said O’Neal. “I have played against Paul, Ray, Kevin, Rajon, and Jermaine for many years and it will be great to be able to call them my teammates. I cannot wait to get to Boston to get started in pursuit of another championship.”

Done deal... Makes NBA2K11 getting out of the east a bit more fun I guess.

I really don't like to see Shaq in all these different jerseys... It will be so odd to see him in a C's jersey

A pretty good read on the Shaq signing:

http://celticshub.com/2010/08/04/scattered-thoughts-on-shaq/

For that money, I think you're going to get value for Shaq. He can still score at the basket which as I said is something the Celtics really need, he can still rebound and block shots. Having said that, if you play him big minutes, in today's P&R league he's going to get burned individually which is going to put a lot of pressure on the C's other players.

For 3 or 4 minutes a quarter off the bench, as the main scoring option, I think it would work out fine. Whether that's how he's used, or how he expects to be used is the question.

Has Sheed officialy retired yet? I read he might be coming back for another year with the C's, that'd make one hell of an angry front court if he did.

I think this will work out better than Cleveland as the C's have players who will make sure Shaq isn't over exposed plus his minutes will probably be down when Perkins is fit so he should stay fresh and fit for the most part.

I might be biased as a Pacer fan but I like the signing of JO aswell he wasn't ever a franchise player like he was forced in to after the Palace incident and always needed the kind of environment like he has now at the Celtics where there are franchise players and he can just do his thing.

I know Shaq's ego is what makes him the character he is but for once I hope he puts aside and just knuckles down and drives for that final ring because if he doesn't he could potentialy split this team and f**k everything up.

It makes sense for Shaq to join the other old fogies(sp?)...

I hate it for the C's point of view as I think their window has already closed and don't seem them getting out of the 2nd round(unless they can dodge the heat and magic till the 3rd).

Against the Lakers their front court was pushed aside, Bynum and Gasol had too much fun but now Shaq brings in some alternate size because outside of Perkins the Celtics didn't have much else to call upon.

This signing makes me hope for a repeat of the Celtics/Lakers in the finals, two mouth watering rivalries all at once I don't think the universe could handle such a thing.

I don't think it makes them a worse team I just worry about chemistry. Having Shaq, JO, Big Baby, Garnett and Perkins split the minutes is very handy in the play offs but I don't see them getting past the magic or heat next year.

Doesn't he still want to start? Sure he can while Perkins is out but do you want Shaq playing all those early season games anyway?

Sheed hasn't retired yet and I understand the only reason for that is so that the Celtics can trade him for someone and then he'll retire.

I think that's the wildcard in all this. If they're able to pick-up a reserve swingman who can play as an undersized 4 and defend multiple positions for Sheed, then I like their chances next year. As it is, they're wafer-thin behind Allen & Pierce, and don't have a stretch 4 behind Garnett, so that is surely what they'd be targetting.

Of the players in the league that somewhat fit that description on similar money:

1. Marvin Williams (Hawks)
2. Andres Nocioni (Sixers)
3. Al Thornton (Wizards)
4. Shane Battier (Rockets)
5. James Posey (Hornets)
6. Jeff Green (Thunder)

Out of those players, I'd say Posey is the most able to be got - the Hornets would like to get out from under his contract and then if they can swing Paul & Okafor for some decent cap friendly players and picks they'd be set moving forward cap wise. Posey is probably also the best fit, hits 3s and can defend 3 positions.

Williams isn't untouchable, but the Hawks would want more than cap relief. He's probably the next best fit for the Celtics, young, improving, can hit 3s and an underrated defender. Same could be said for Green.

Battier has slipped a fair bit from 3 years ago but he's still a quality defender and still converts from distance. Don't think the Rockets would trade him though, given he's an expiring contract and it won't make a huge difference to their cap position (they're over by $20m+).

Nocioni has gone backwards for 4 straight years and offers the least defensively, but can hit 3s and will bring toughness. He's also better than no replacement for Sheed.

Thornton is intriguing. He's been disappointing most of his career but regained his outside shooting touch last year and is strong overall defensively. Given the lack of depth at SF for the Wiz though, I don't expect him to be traded.

I'll also just say on Posey - his contract expires 2012 which is when KG, Allen, Nate & JO come off the books as well I think. If they're going all in with this group, there's no harm in adding Posey's contract as well IMO.

NETS AGREE TO CONTRACT WITH SEAN MAY

By Adrian Wojnarowski, Yahoo! Sports
7 hours, 27 minutes ago

Free agent forward Sean May has agreed to a one-year contract with the New Jersey Nets, a league source told Yahoo! Sports.

May, who will make the league minimum, played 37 games for the Sacramento Kings last season. He was the 13th overall pick for the Charlotte Bobcats in 2005, where he played four seasons. Injuries and weight issues derailed what had started out as a promising career with the Bobcats.

May averaged a career-high 11.9 points in the 2006-07 season.

Nice

The Lakers and free agent guard Shannon Brown have agreed on a two-year contract worth $4.6 million, Brown's agent, Mark Bartelstein, said Thursday morning.

"Shannon could have made more money somewhere else, but I think he really wanted to play this out with the Lakers," Bartelstein said. "They've won it [all] two years in a row and the chance to win three straight [championships] doesn't come around every day."
