Sleeper team - Timberwolves.

Seriously...Kevin love looks like a beast, Wes Johnson looks solid, Beasley looks good, ridnour looks ok, and Flynn will be fine.

PG - Johnny Flynn
SG - Wesley Johnson
SF - Michael Beasley
PF - Kevin Love
C - Darko Milicic
Bench:
F - Corey Brewer
G - Luke Ridnour
F - Nikola Pekovic
G/F - Martell Webster
F - Lazar Hayward
F - Anthony Tolliver
G - Sebastian Telfair
C - Kosta Koufos

While it may be ambitious to play Wes Johnson at SG, you can put Ridnour at PG and Flynn at SG - Ready for when Rubio comes.

But either way...I think they are a sneaky team.

Same with the Clippers.

Couldn't disagree more on the wolves to be honest. Flynn was pretty ordinary in his rookie year and I don't expect he's going to be much better in year 2 - he's a 6 foot shoot-first point guard with iffy 3-point range. Ridnour I fully expect to be worse than last year - his shooting percentages for last year were all career highs which he won't repeat. Beasley and Love are quality players although I'm not expecting consistency from Beasley. Darko is Darko, they're thin on the wings and their coach is seemingly still playing chop and change with his schemes.

The Clippers on the other hand could well be a lot better this year. Still no small forward but they're pretty set everywhere else. And I know it's only preseason but Griffin pulling down 17 boards against Duncan & Blair bodes well for the future. I'm tipping him for ROTY.

I thought Griffen was more of a SF out of College than a PF?

He is a BEAST

Cousins is a BEAST as well...for the Kings...wow.

I agree with Hawk re the wolves and clippers. If Baron can stay healthy then the clips could make a play offs push. My only problem is they have a BUNCH of average players on their roster (Butler, Smith, Gomes etc) with some serviceable guys in Kaman and Gordon. If Griffin and Baron fire then they could make a push but still questionable. A sleeper though...

The wolves need a quality veteran.. If they had always planned to get rid of Al Jeff they should have grabbed Cousins imo. Clusterf**k. Wesley Johnson is talented but is 23... I know he has history with Flynn but to take a 23 year old at #4 then they should be a legit ROTY contender which I don't think he is with Griffin, Cousins, Wall etc around.

Rubio will never wear a wolves jersey also. If the wolves can flip him for something useful asap then they need to look at it imo

I dunno. I just have a feeling the Wolves will turn from a crap, sh*t team to an average team this year. I just don't think they'll be as bad.

Key to the Clips will be how much time Butler & Gomes split at the 3 - Butler is only just average and I like Gomes but he isn't a 3. Kaman & Griffin should complement eachother well and Davis & Gordon is a solid back-court (provided Baron plays the right way, always a 50/50). If they can pick-up a solid wing during the year or somehow luck into one via a trade without giving up any of their top 4 then they'll definitely push.

I like a few of the Wolves pieces but I just think they're going to struggle. Darko plays well for 3 months in a contract year and gets another guaranteed deal. Hopefully that turns out better than the last two teams that did that. Hopefully signing a 29 year old point guard coming off a contract year doesn't bite them either, or upset their 2009 6th overall pick's confidence. Johnson should be able to help straight away, but as K said he's 23 so I doubt he's ever going to improve dramatically. The rest of the team really strikes me as average to below average (Brewer, Webster, Telfair, Pekovic). I think they'll improve, if only because they'd have to be historically bad to only win 15 games again, but if they win more than 25 games I'd be staggered.

Nah bro. If they had done that, they wouldn't have been able to sign Darko..........lol

Agree with the sentiments on Cousins. Dude has the talent to be special.

His rebounding numbers in college were prodigious. Iirc he averaged something like 10 boards per games while only averaging 23 mins per game.

Watched a fair bit of this morning's Nets / Rockets game. A few things stood out:

1. Yao looked as fleet-footed as ever.
2. Budinger looks like he could be a very valuable reserve this year. Has the range on his jumper, active rebounder and moved the ball and didn't really force the action.
3. Courteny Lee has started to fill out a bit, should help him on the defensive end. If he can hit the open jumpers he gets, he and Budinger should form a very solid second-unit tandem.
4. Derrick Favors looked lost a lot of the time, and really uninterested. I was worried about Cousins' lack of motivation this year but based on what I've seen of both, I think Favors is the bigger concern.
5. The Rockets will have a great second unit. In addition to Budinger and Lee, Jared Jeffries looked really solid, moved well without the ball and looked much better playing with some quality teammates. Knows his role.

It's only preseason, and it was only against the Nets, but the Rockets could be the big mover out West. A healthy Yao with some of those solid players and they should get back to the playoffs. Lack a legit star to take them to the next level but they're a very deep team.

It will be interesting to see how strictly the Rockets enforce their 24 minute limit on Yao.

Say you're down to the last 5 minutes of a close game. Yao's been playing great. Are they going to then take him out of the game because he's played his minutes quota?

I'd imagine his playing time will be monitored so that he's available for the end of every game if needed.

I think with a game on the line they'll go with Yao. 24 is probably a guideline with 3 or 4 minutes either side as the actual amount played. I'm sure if they're getting blown out in the first half they won't bring him back into the game for instance.

Here's hoping he comes through this season and can get back to 30 minutes a game next season. Never like him much till I saw him playing through injury in the 08 Playoffs, great effort.

I'm not sure the Nets will be that bad this season, they will improve i'm sure, Troy Murphy will be a bonus when he finally gets on court.

The Bucks will go good, they have been going good so far in pre-season, without Salmons, Maggette and Bogut.

Hornets add some depth to their front-court:

http://sports.espn.go.com/nba/news/story?id=5681426

Dacos!

A good signing in that they were paper-thin behind Okafur (Aaron Gray) but a bad signing in that Mbenga aiis hardly going to be a difference maker when he's on the court. But if he can give them 15 minutes a night with good defence and rebounding then it's a bonus.

What a joke. FFS NBA officiating is dodgy as it is.

EL SEGUNDO, Calif. -- Midway through the second quarter of the Los Angeles Lakers' preseason game against the Sacramento Kings on Wednesday, Lamar Odom was whistled for a shooting foul against Carl Landry.

After the call was made, Odom kept his offending arm up in the air for several seconds to indicate he believed his defense was legal and within the rule of verticality, and an official promptly issued him a technical foul.

The explanation? Even though Odom's mouth was silent, his arm was raised for more than three seconds. Automatic technical.

"That was one of the weirdest technicals I've ever gotten," Odom said after the game.

The situation surrounding the NBA's new guidelines for technical fouls -- which will expand to include "overt" player reactions to referee calls this season -- is becoming even weirder.

The National Basketball Players Association issued a strongly worded statement Thursday that threatened legal action and said the changes "may actually harm our product."

"The new unilateral rule changes are an unnecessary and unwarranted overreaction on the league's behalf," NBPA director Billy Hunter said. "We have not seen any increase in the level of 'complaining' to the officials and we believe that players as a whole have demonstrated appropriate behavior toward the officials.

"Worse yet, to the extent the harsher treatment from the referees leads to a stifling of the players' passion and exuberance for their work, we fear these changes may actually harm our product. The changes were made without proper consultation with the players association, and we intend to file an appropriate legal challenge," he said.
While an NBPA lawsuit against the NBA in the midst of the two sides' negotiations for a new collective bargaining agreement would certainly be a bad thing for business, Lakers head coach Phil Jackson does not think the rule change is necessarily a bad thing.

"I'd really like to see them clean up the post-foul activity by players," Jackson said after practice Friday. "I think that's the right sentiment. I think it looks better cosmetically for the game if guys just said, 'Yeah, I fouled,' or 'I'll accept the foul,' and go ahead and play the game. Go on with it, rather than try to bargain or protest or create crowd sympathy by their activities. So, I'm in concurrence with it."
Along with essentially giving players less leeway when complaining to officials while empowering refs to issue technicals more frequently, the league also doubled the financial penalty associated with a technical.

Players and coaches will now be docked $2,000 for each of their first five technical fouls. The cost rises to $3,000 for the next five, followed by $4,000 for Nos. 11-15. Starting at 16, players are suspended one game for every two technicals, along with a $5,000 fine for each.

Even if Odom doesn't agree with the rule, he does think that the fastest way to a player's mouth is through his wallet.

"You have to zip it," Odom said. "If they call you for a tech, it's $2,000. That's a lot of money in America or anywhere. I don't want to give away $2,000 for going, 'Damn, I thought I had the ball!' or showing emotion. I want to keep my money, point blank."
The rule affects the Lakers especially because Kobe Bryant isn't just one of the game's most prolific scorers; he also picks up more T's than a professional Scrabble player. Bryant was whistled for 14 technical fouls last season, fourth-most in the league. In 2008-09 he was called for 11 and the season before that he picked up a league-leading 15 technicals.

When asked about the rule change during media day, Bryant said, "I thought it was like that already." He was partially correct: The league launched a similar initiative prior to the 2006-07 season before abandoning the enforcement of it early on in that season.

Jackson believes that consistent implementation of the new rule by the officials will curb the unwanted behavior from the players.

"Guys will learn," Jackson said. "The one thing about it is, guys will learn very quickly if they get fined or they get ejected. ... Just call it; guys will stop doing it. It may take a week or so, but guys learn real quickly in this game.

As much as the Lakers seemed resigned to the rule's staying in effect with less than two weeks before the start of the regular season, they still pointed out problems with it.

Odom pointed out that a player could raise his arm for more than three seconds after a foul call and actually be identifying himself as the culprit, respecting the game.
"Sometimes guys even raise their hands saying, 'Oh, yeah, I [fouled] him,'" Odom said. "Sometimes people would consider that good basketball etiquette."

Jackson said that it could actually end up causing more headaches for the referees.
"In the second half [after the Odom technical], I heard my coaching staff say about the Sacramento team, 'He's got his arm up too long!'' Jackson said. "Just tit for tat, but we hope it doesn't get into that stuff."

Pau Gasol said that in Europe the officials allow occasional outbursts because they believe that is the nature of the game. "It's an emotional game, no matter what," Gasol said. "I understand the cursing and a bit of reaction to a call, [but] you're going to react if you don't agree with a call. You can't keep yourself cool all the time."

Odom also pointed out the hypocrisy of the league's celebrating emotional play in television commercials and advertisements, while at the same time punishing emotional reactions to the officials by doling out technical fouls.

"It's kind of crazy because that's what people love to see. You watch the commercials and the NBA has dunking, [players making] faces and 'Where Amazing Happens,'" Odom said. "Now it's like 'Where Normal Happens.' ... There's nothing amazing about not showing emotion."

Yup Stern really has gone off his head in recent times and started making changes for the sake of it. It's not as if players complaining to referees is a huge deal as is, Sheed is the only one that really took it too far and he's gone now.

Lol Arenas. Don't mind what he did. Just can't believe he was stupid enough to admit to it after the game.

The Washington Wizards fined guard Gilbert Arenas $50,000 for faking a knee injury on Tuesday, several media outlets reported.

Arenas said his knee was sore Tuesday morning and did not play in that night's game against Atlanta.

After the game Arenas told reporters he had faked the injury so guard Nick Young could get more playing time. Young scored 24 points against the Hawks. The team fined Arenas on Wednesday.

After Wednesday's practice, Arenas first said he wasn't talking, then appeared before reporters offering a halfhearted apology for his actions.

"I screwed up again, so I just want to say sorry," he said. "I wasn't really thinking that this was going to be another media outburst. It's like everything I do now, someone, tit for tat, tries to blow it out of proportion."

Arenas didn't start Thursday against Milwaukee, but suffered a groin injury just three minutes after coming into the game in the first quarter.
