Billy Hunter doubts entire '11-12 season

Players Association executive director Billy Hunter says the 2011-12 NBA season will likely be canceled entirely because the commissioner's negotiating leeway is in danger of being undermined by a group of hard-line owners.

"The circumstances have changed among [David Stern's] constituency," Hunter told a group of lawyers Wednesday, as quoted in the Baltimore Sun. "In the last six or seven years, there is a new group of owners to come in who paid a premium for their franchises, and what they're doing is kind of holding his feet to the fire."
Hunter told an American Bar Association conference that if he "had to bet on it", he would wager that there will be no NBA season.

"We're $800 million apart per year," Hunter said Wednesday, adding, "something has to happen that both of us can use as leverage to save face."

NBA owners and players held a formal collective bargaining session for the first high-level negotiations in a month Monday but after nearly three hours of discussions the sides emerged as far apart as they were when the day began. Stern said the sides were "at the same place" as they were when the lockout began July 1 just before the old collective bargaining agreement ran out.

Owners are seeking significant changes to the league's salary structure, claiming $300 million in losses last season and hundreds of millions more in each year of the previous agreement, which was ratified in 2005. Players have acknowledged the losses but disputed their size, and they've balked at the league's push for a hard salary cap and reduction in salaries and maximum contract lengths.

The union has encouraged players to find work rather than give in to the owners' economic demands, with the hope that owners would offer better proposals if they see their players have other options. Hunter recently sent a memo to all players endorsing locked-out players to consider playing overseas.

Nets All-Star Deron Williams agreed to an overseas deal with Besiktas of Turkey, the only superstar with an overseas deal thus far, though some lesser players have one. Many elite players say they are keeping it as an option.

Information from The Associated Press was used in this report.

Damn. Hope Hunter is just posturing here. Worrying stuff.

Its going to suck if the lockout goes into the start of the season, i don't want to be watching our boring cricket team play all summer, could be a long summer of NBA 2K12.

Could suit the Spurs a shorter season, keep Duncan fresh and less chance of injury to Ginobili or Parker

The total number of games would be less, but it's likely that the remaining games would be crammed into a shorter time span (i.e. more back to backs). So teams like the Lakers, Spurs, Celtics could possible be more hurt than helped by it.

Guess it depends on how many games we'll get.

Alex Meruelo to purchase Hawks

ATLANTA -- California developer and pizza chain owner Alex Meruelo has reached an agreement to purchase majority ownership of the Atlanta Hawks, the team has confirmed.

The deal, reported by The Associated Press on Sunday, is to be announced at a news conference on Monday. Meruelo, the son of Cuban immigrants, will become the NBA's first Hispanic majority owner if the deal is approved by the league. He says buying the Hawks "is a dream come true for me."

Meruelo will have controlling interest of more than 50 percent of the Hawks, who will remain in Atlanta.

The Hawks have been owned by a group led by Michael Gearon Jr. and Bruce Levenson. The owners also recently sold the NHL's Atlanta Thrashers to a group that moved the team to Winnipeg.

Report: Ron Artest to visit Cheshire Jets

Ron Artest will visit the Cheshire Jets in Britain later this month to discuss playing for them during the lockout, Artest's publicist, Courtney Barnes, told the Los Angeles Times on Tuesday night.

The newspaper, which had reported earlier Tuesday that Artest would play with the Jets, said Artest will be in the United Kingdom Aug. 18-23.

A post on Artest's Twitter page read: "Go Jets!!!!! Uk , here we come!!! Jets are the best!!! Jets are the best!!! New chant!!!!!!!!!"

Peter Hawkins, director of the Jets, said on the team's website: "We are honoured that Ron has even mentioned the prospect of joining The Jets. Financially we have nothing to offer him, but it would be so significant for UK basketball we have offered him a stake in the club and all the love in the world!"

According to FIBA rules, Artest would have to return to the Lakers once the NBA lockout ends.

Artest averaged 8.5 points per game last season and appeared in all 82 games for the Lakers. He has three years and $21 million remaining on his contract.

Good timing. England could use some Metta World Peace.

HOUSTON -- Houston will host the NBA's All-Star weekend in 2013.

Tere Perry, public relations manager at the Hilton Americas hotel, confirmed that the hotel has been informed that the All-Star Game and the events surrounding it are coming to Houston in February 2013. The hotel is across the street from the Toyota Center, the home of the Rockets, where the game was played in 2006.

KRIV-TV first reported that the city had landed the game. Houston also hosted the 1989 All-Star Game at the Astrodome.

Neither the Rockets nor the NBA would comment on the report.

Ty Lawson taking his game to Lithuania

Associated Press

DENVER -- Ty Lawson will join Zalgiris Kaunas of Lithuania, signing a deal that will allow the Denver Nuggets point guard to return to the NBA if the lockout ends.

Paulius Motiejunas, the general director of Zalgiris Kaunas, confirmed the deal Monday night. A message was left for Lawson's agent.'

Lawson will team up with Sonny Weems, a former Nuggets guard who signed with the international squad last month. Unlike Lawson's deal, Weems agreed to a contract without an NBA opt-out clause. Weems played last season for Toronto.

The speedy Lawson averaged 11.7 points and 4.7 assists last season for the Nuggets.

The Denver Post first reported the story. Lawson told the paper, "It's the best situation for me to go out there."

Intriguing. Apart from Deron, probably the best player thus far to have confirmed to playing overseas.

No China for players under contract

Associated Press

BEIJING -- The Chinese Basketball Association will restrict contracted NBA players from playing for domestic teams in the event the NBA season is canceled, but still will allow free agents, state media reported Friday.

The CBA would bar players under contract such as Kobe Bryant, Carmelo Anthony and Chris Paul.

They and others had expressed interest in playing in China if the NBA lockout drags on and results in the cancellation of all or part of the 2011-12 season.

The CBA said it will welcome free-agent NBA players, but will require them to play an entire season in China, the Xinhua News Agency reported.

Xinhua said more restrictions would be announced before the start of the Chinese season on Nov. 20.

It reported contracts would be designed to discourage players from ducking out for dubious reasons, such as suspect injuries or unverified family problems at home.

CBA officials could not be reached immediately for comment.

Surprising development. Wonder what the China Basketball Associations reasoning for this? I guess they thought that the unpredictability of having players, who would bolt the moment the NBA got back on track, as being too big a factor to be hanging over teams?

When will the lockout end ? anyone been hearing anything positive..??

So far everything's been pretty much negative. Both sides are pretty far apart. Personally don't think either side will look to get serious until we actually start missing pre-season games.

Officials from the league and players' association will meet again next week, people with knowledge of the plans told The Associated Press on Thursday.

It will be only the second session involving leaders from both sides since the lockout started July 1.

"If Labor Day comes and goes without us huddled in ready to kiss off our Labor Day weekend to make this deal, then we may be headed to a bad place," Stern said during an ESPN.com podcast earlier this month.

Next week's session will include top negotiators for both sides: Stern and deputy commissioner Adam Silver, as well as union executive director Billy Hunter and president Derek Fisher of the Los Angeles Lakers.

Others may attend, but the meeting is expected to be small. Plans were for it to be held early in the week, though that could change if expected bad weather from Hurricane Irene hampers travel to New York.

What about Javaris Crittenton (former NBA player), he is wanted for murder.

Former NBA player Crittenton charged with murder
13 minutes ago

ATLANTA (AP)—Police say former NBA player Javaris Crittenton(notes) has been charged with murder after a woman was shot on an Atlanta street.

Police spokesman Carlos Campos says police have secured a murder warrant for the arrest of Crittenton, who played at Georgia Tech, in connection with the shooting death of 22-year-old Jullian Jones on Aug. 19. Campos said Crittenton is not in custody and is wanted.

Police said Jones was walking with a group of people on the city’s southwest side when she was shot.

Investigators say they don’t believe the woman was the intended target. Campos said the motive appears to be retaliation for a robbery in April, in which Crittenton was a victim.
