you need complete players at this level. cartwright's defensive game is miles behind his offensive game. sure, the gulf widens because he is one of the better attacking forwards in the comp, but his defence is clearly middle of the road amongst others in the League. a clear weakness. he's not ready until he improves his defence.

Fair enough. I haven't seen enough of cartwright to claim any sort of expertise. I think I'm just so sick of losing that I'm clutching at straws.

Last game Cartwright made 29 tackles and missed 1. The game before he made 23 and missed 3. Both games he played the full 80. These are not earth shattering figures but for a player with his skills with the ball they are perfectly adequate.

Having said that I'm with the "wait until next year" camp. Unless the old faithfuls cop another drubbing in game 1 of course.

The more I hear Daley on Fox, the more apparent it becomes that there will be little to no change. He cites the fact that the game count stands as 5-4 under his watch as justification that he has the right team. He says that NSW have been " outstanding except for the last game "
It's just going to be more low risk, blind loyalty and the same result. Dugan playing centre in the test would lead me to believe that Daley will play him there also and bring in a new fullback, leaving out Josh Morris. He will also need a winger, Ferguson.
1- Moylan, Coote
2- Ferguson
3- Dugan
4- Jennings
5- Hopoate
6- Maloney, Reynolds
7- Hodkinson, Pearce
13- Gallen
12- Scott
11- Bird
10- Woods
9- Farrah
8- Tamou

14- Merrin
15- Klemmer
16- Cordner
17- Jackson

Yes. That's what I was saying.

The only people who make great coaches are immortals.

So what? Phil Gould (for example) never won an Origin series as a player either, let alone a first grade Grand Final. However he has coached NSW to more series wins than anyone else has and coached 2 different teams to first grade grand final wins.

Your idea is flawed as there are more examples of "star" players making poor coaches and of ordinary players making good coaches than vice versa.

Qld 3-0

Thing is he is being "advised" by the same brains trust that selected the same teams year in year out for him (e.g. Bozo Fulton). Is it any wonder that when Wayne Bennett came back for his second stint as Qld Origin Coach, he cleaned out the selectors as well as the team.

Until NSW do similar, they are consigned to repeating mistakes no matter who is coach.

You are either missing my point or being deliberately obtuse.

In the interest of clear communication I'll leave out the sarcasm and jokes:

I believe that Mitchell Pearce does not know what it takes to win an origin series, as evidenced by the fact that he has never done so.

If you wish to disagree with that statement, please don't hesitate to do so and outline your reasons. (Or don't. You have choices in life)

If you wish to disagree with something that I haven't said, or something you have inferred from what I have said, you are only having an internal debate.

Dugan, Jennings and Ferguson will all be in the backline somewhere. Sounds like J Morris is on the outer. I'd like to see Mansour get a run. He'd fit into Origin really well. Tough as nails and does a lot of the tough stuff.

Farah and Pearce will be in the side. Maloney probably gets the 5/8. Gallen, Tamou will both be there. The rest who knows. Cartwright will probably get a spot on the bench with Klemmer. Josh Jackson will be in the mix somewhere.

I was in that camp until a few weeks ago, now I think he has to come off the bench, its perfect for him. NSW don't even have any halves that are as skilled as Carty, we could really use him imo.

Cartwright can hold his own defensively, he has a tendency to rush in and hit chest to chest which leads to him bouncing off a fair bit but most of the time he knocks down or stops the attacker as well.

Since the core of QLD's team come from NQ, Bris, Storm maybe think a bit differently and load the NSW squad with the NSW eligible players from those 3 teams.

e.g. James Roberts, Lachlan Coote, Dale Finucane.

The reason being they will know what the QLD stars are doing because they see it every day at training. Whereas the "pick & stick" NSW players like M Pearce have played series after series against those same starts but are continually bamboozled by their same plays.

I'm starting to think Daley the good player he was is not the man for the job if he continues to pick the same players again and again.

The team I would like to see run out would be

1 Coote
2 Ferguson
3 Dugan
4 Jennings
5 Hopoate
6 Maloney
7 Reynolds (The Souths one)
8 Gallen
9 Peats
10 Tamou
11 Frizzell
12 Cordiner
13 Scott
14 Merrin
15 Cartwright
16 Klemmer
17 Moylan

Woods in there somewhere if fit.
I have left Jackson out as I don't see what he offers.

1. Moylan
2. Ferguson
3. Dugan
4. Jennings
5. Mansour
6. Maloney (Wherever he plays his teams are successful, easily our form half atm)
7. Sezer/A Reynolds/Plodkinson (in that order IMO)
8. Woods
9. Farah/Peats (leaning to the incumbent as having two rookies in the spine is enough)
10. Tamou
11. Bird
12. Scott
13. Gallen (c)

14. Cartwright
15. Klemmer
16. Fifita
17. Austin or Frizzell

It's a truly sad reflection of NSW's halfback stocks that a bloke who has played one game this season against the wooden spooners, and been involved in no less than seven losing series (and no winning ones), and whose selection would be a huge PR liability for the game, is considered the best option we have.

Sezer has been shite the past few games, Soward was excellent yesterday but has been hot and cold all year. His kicking in general play is still first class but that's about all. Hodkinson is playing in a side getting thrashed every week. I just cannot see any alternatives to the dog lover.

I really want NSW to win this series but it's very hard to support a team with that dog loving merkin in it.

One of the rumours going around said Pearce had rang Laurie to say the official line is "I'm available " .
But don't pick me .
& apparently Laurie agreed so that dog lover can concentrate onplaying for his club .

I hope it's bullshit .
As a Qlder I want him there

I have left Jackson out as I don't see what he offers.

Ennis for Peats.
Mansour for Hopoate.
Ferguson isn't a winger. Haven't we got any specialist wingers in this state? When will these people come to realise that wing is a specialised position, not just somewhere to put your favourites who aren't good enough to make it in their regular position?
I'd be happy to see Gallen left out too, as he reaffirms a commitment to bash and barge tactics that have only worked when Cronk was out, ie Qld had no attack. Nonetheless he will be the second player picked, after the Dog Boy.

Not keen on Moylan on the bench, either. Someone like Peachey would be much more useful, especially if he comes on with Cartwright. However, I don't think they'll select Peachey for the same reasons they didn't select Preston Campbell.

The one who should be dumped is Daley. And Bozo should go with him.

My side would be:

1. Coote
2. Roberts
3. Jennings
4. Dugan
5. Ferguson
6. Moylan
7. Maloney
8. Tamou
9. Ennis
10. Woods
11. Bird
12. Scott
13. Gallen (c)

14. Cartwright
15. Fifita
16. Klemmer
17. Frizzell

Moylan hasn't played half yet. But I see him and Maloney as a safer halves pairing than any other.
Ennis is in a lot better form than Farah and should have an advantage with club combination
Starting pack wouldn't have much creativity in it but is strong defensively and the creativity can come from the bench. Although with that backline and halves I think we could be patient before needing the bench to add spark.

It's sad that we have no obvious halves choices. It's easily the area we aren't close to competing in and has been since Joey retired.
