Mandrills is different. Right city, right colours it could be marketed well. I personally would prefer the more renowned Gorilla moniker but it definitely has the advantage of being unique.

And the advantage of being potentially way more badass!

I think if a team from Christchurch ever gets into the NRL, they should use the kea as their mascot - our alpine parrot with a huge sharp beak, native to the Southern Alps.

Being from the west I was thinking the western browns similar to the Cleveland browns but he logo would be the western brown snake and call the stadium the snake pit. Brown jerseys with gold or orange and white

I don't mind that.

I like Geckos too. Blue-tongues. Red-backs (although the distinctive look is the female of the species). The Adelaide Atrax [funnel webs].

I really like that idea, even if the Browns name has already been made famous by Cleveland.

Speaking of snakes, I've always liked the idea of a team called the Red-bellies, their jerseys could be red on the front and black on the back.

I don't mind that.

Honestly who cares.

When it comes to insects and arachnids the females are generally (but not always) the larger, more brightly coloured and more aggressive of the two sexes.

Any team with Wasps ( London Wasps), Hornets (Charlotte), Bees, spiders, scorpions, mantises, etc, more likely then not have females in their logos and as their mascots. In the case of the the London Wasps and Charlotte Hornets they certainly have female mascots.

Re the Roosters. I've heard it has something to do with the sun rising in the east.....the rooster crows in the morning. Something like that.

I know it's not a gorilla, never claimed it was. Was just stating of any of the primates, the gorilla was my pick as most recognisable. Great Dane has a point though, cool picture.

Birds of prey are certainly under-utilised as well. Hawks, Crows, etc. Okay both of these have a start in the AFL but again, in a different town/market I don't see a problem.

Of course, we lost the Magpie along the way.

We both understand that mandrills aren't gorillas, we were discussing the advantages of each as mascots.

BTW mandrills are not baboons. Though it was once thought that mandrills (and their cousins the drills) were baboons and therefore part of the genus Papio, recent genetic research has found that they are more closely related to the white-eyelid mangabeys (genus Cercocebus), subsequently they have been placed into their own genus, Mandrillus.

I think the kea concept is an incredibly unique concept, would love to see it someday. As an aside, there is no plural form of 'kea', so the team would be, for example, the South Island Kea.

I think any new NZ team has a great branding and marketing opportunity given the non-representation in our shared sporting leagues of animals in Te Reo (Maori language) or of native NZ animals in general (NZ Kiwis the exception of course...).

Less generic, less US-inspired, more specific please!

Can't believe no one has mentioned calling a new side the Emus. Huge imposing Australian bird that no sporting side has ever used.

On giant kickarse birds, North Queensland should have been the Cassowaries.

My pet hate with team names is when a word like "Storm" or "flame" is used.

I like the flames it still works in calgary but obviously worked a lot better when they were in the big peach. Terrible sports town though

Sticking with NZ theme, maybe instead of being called the Orca, Wellington should call themselves the Wellington Tuatara.

What about crabs, numerous species makes a cool logo and secondary logo
When our minor league team moved from vero beach to port charlotte one of the best things we did was switching from devil rays to stone crabs. Anyone think the name would be alright for a RL team?
