I didn't mean crabs in relation to the next franchise from New Zealand, was just wondering if it would be suitable for a rugby league team.

Not sure players would like to be associated with crabs lol!

Dolphins needs to come in at some point, Redcliffe need to accept they can't have a monopoly on an American sports name.

Given if there is expansion it is likely to be
WC Pirates
Brisbane Brothers/Bombers

Then there isn't much room for any new names for another ten years plus.

Well the stone crabs are only are minor league team playing in the FSL but we have had multiple players go on to play in the bigs, none of the players have complained about the name and merchandise sales have been good since the team moved to port charlotte

Yeah there's nothing wrong with teams being named after crabs (the crustaceans) and PR wasn't saying that there was, think about it.

Yeah I know exactly what he meant, having worked in the crabs front office for a couple of years I've heard all the jokes from opposing teams front offices and their fans
But as I said none of the players ever complained and our merchandise revenue was good.

Why do you say Dolphins is American? There are just as many dolphins in the waters off the Australian coast as there are off the coast of the US. In fact I would say there are more.

I'm not saying that dolphins are American! Just that many sports teams are called dolphins with the most famous and first pro one to be Miami. Redcliffe stopping an NRL club using it is just silly.

uh not really when the Dolphins are a pretty well known brand in Qld, especially in RL circles and the north side of Brisbane

It's not silly at all and while dolphins would have been a better nickname than titans, you can't blame redcliffe for what they did at the time. Maybe the perth bid team should've used it instead of buccos. Pirates is derivative anyway and there are dolphins swimming in the river 1.5 kms from the stadium

I'd have Bern quite happy with west coast dolphins. I had hoped the mandurah club would have called themselves dolphins given mandurah is famous for them but there was advantages to be named after a NRL club so they went with storm.
Pirates is a good chouce, has some relevance to WA history and is a marketers dream branding.

The other thing the NRL should ensure is they offer the new club(s) the colours, so we don't get another yellow and blue team.

Pirates would be great. I for one can't wait for the day the WCPs get in the comp.

I also like the Bombers logo and colours (not saying I like their bid or anything).

Of the front runners you have:

WCPIRATES red, black &gold
Bombers blue, orange and silver
Brothers navy blue and white (reckon emerald green and white would be better for a team with a leprechaun as a logo)
CC Bears red & black

Has there been anything further from the Western Corridor bid? I thought they had something in the works when they claimed the team would be known as Jagera, but nothing further regarding colours or emblem in over 2 years. I do like the green/silver which has been mooted.

Pirates is ok, not sure how many people here would know of black jack Anderson though. seems like they're piggybacking on the back of the disney films more than anything, kinda like what happened in tdot with the raptors

i am a firm beleiver new team names should be connected to your heritage. the gold coast should NEVER have gone with titans. after all what is a titan ?? they should have gone with Gold Coast Sting Rays. i really hate Melbourne Storm. who calls a team after a weather pattern. ? NED Kelly wasnt he from Glenrowan. ? they should have gone with the Melbourne Bush Rangers.

I've always liked the Storm. Melbourne is famous for its shit weather, four seasons in one day, etc. Fits well.

But yeah, it's a pity GC couldn't use Dolphins like they originally intended.

It may be called a Titan, but it isn't one.

The difference between a titan and a colossus is that colossus is an old word for giant statue depicting either a god or a man (the Statue of Liberty is technically a colossus), where a titan is basically a god from the titan pantheon of gods in Greco-Roman mythology.

The Titans were basically the gods, until Kronos (or Cronus), the king of the Titans was over thrown by his children the Olympians (most notably Zeus, Poseidon and Hades) by being dragged (while drunk) into the cave of Nyx (Night) (I think Nyx is the right spelling) where he sleeps for eternity. The Olympians overthrew Kronos because he would eat the Olympians (his children) in an attempt to keep complete control over the universe, obviously that plan backfired.

So a titan is a living breathing being (in the stories of course) and a colossus is just a giant statue (did I mention that the word colossal come from the word colossus ).

This is a post from another thread, the bold bits explain what a titan is.
