Just saw some lowlights of the Crusaders vs Chiefs. In the opening fixture all NZ clash ( what you'd consider their blockbuster)
The stadium looked less full than an NRL trial! Only a week ago 😂
Yeh tried looking for the crowd for that

surprise surprise couldn’t find it

you would think at least the opening game would be sold out

So will you be saying the same thing when all of those first round NRL games don't sell out?

I wonder what kinda crowd a Moana Pacifica would get 😳 or Melbourne rebels at that ground if last years champions didn't sell it out.

As usual, so limited in your thinking, fighting a two dimensional war in a three dimensional world. Once again you completely miss the point of Super Rugby.
What’s the point of Super Rugby?

I always felt it was a competition designed specifically because the individual countries can’t sustain top level competitions on their own. There’s barely enough interest for five Australian teams (if that) and New Zealand‘s entire population is smaller than Sydney’s and there’s no room for expansion there without self-cannibalisation. The South Africans gave up on it. The Japanese gave up on it. The Argentines gave up on it. Fiji will likely collapse soon enough.

So what is the point of it?

Exactly what it was for

the entry of the warriors was a huge threat to rugby union in nz

the kiwis knew their market was too small to sustain a viable comp so they needed australia to make it credible

problem being australia could never sustain more than 3 teams and then they forced out sa who were the bedrock of the comp

New Zealand should just get used to the fact that if they want a strong all blacks side they will have to allow their players to play in Europe they can’t afford to keep them at home down the track

Just because you felt that, doesn;t make it true.

And every single NRL expansion involves "self-cannibalisation". It's a fact of life. And there is still plenty of room for expansion, if necessary.

The South Africans gave up on it. The Japanese gave up on it. The Argentines gave up on it. Fiji will likely collapse soon enough.

Now you are just making shit up. literally none of that is true. Covid forced SA, The Japanese and the Arginitinies out. And fiji likely to collapse is just the usual drivel on here with out any way to substantiated.

So what is the point of it?

To get players ready for Internationals. Where all the money is made.

As usual coward your entire post is wrong.

Regardless, it’s pretty much true. The most recent NRL expansions were Melbourne (5 million people with no existing team), Gold Coast (720,000 people with no existing team) and Dolphins (2.3 million in rugby league mad Brisbane with only 1 team). And the consensus with Brisbane for several decades is that it has needed more than 1 team. None of those are examples of cannibalisation.

Here’s the list of places that the NRL can expand to: Perth, Adelaide, Wellington, Christchurch. All cities without existing teams. Then beyond that Sunshine Coast, Central Coast, Hobart. Also cities without existing teams. Potentially also second Melbourne and Auckland sides. I’m not saying all those places will get teams but it shows how many options the NRL has.

Where’s Super Rugby expanding to? The Australian teams struggle. Force was already axed once in 2017 and is basically propped up by a single financial backer, so an Adelaide team isn’t happening, let alone any of those other Australian locations. And New Zealand is tapped out.

And despite your rewriting of history it wasn’t just Covid that killed those other teams. Japan made their decision to pull their team in March 2019. Covid shut downs didn’t start until 2020. It was pure coincidence, 2020 was always going to be their final year. Jaguares were a financial basketcase for years. And South Africa were always going to ditch Super Rugby for Europe because of time zones and that’s where the money is. So yeah, you’re sticking your head in the sand there. Fiji won’t see out the decade. The country is smaller and poorer than the other three that already ditched the comp. They also don’t bring anything to comp in terms of broadcasting rights, which is the biggest financial driver.

And if Super Rugby only exists to set up the All Blacks, well conversely it clearly has done nothing to help the Wallabies.

Nailed it

reality is australia can sustain 3 teams tops

the two pacifika sides aren’t viable either

so that leaves an 8 team comp which isn’t viable

they should just go and join the top 14

I actually think what will happen down the track is the nz union sides will form league teams as well because there will be so much more money in rugby league

that would give the nrl two Auckland teams and the rest of the country covered as well

once the nrl salary cap hits 15 million plus then it’s how I think those union clubs react to that threat

I wonder who covers their losses
Some mates of mine went to Melbourne last year for the round where all Aussie sides and the Fiji side play there over the weekend. It’s called something or the other round. The crowds were awful. I don’t know how rugby Australia funds these teams. NZ teams are clearly superior and the comp is completely lop sided. I don’t watch rugby barely ever now but I will watch kiwi sides play each other. That’s when the sport’s at its best supported by non pedantic officials who actually want quality football on display .

Even in nz the game has gone backwards

super rugby is nothing like it was 20 years ago

crowds are down

the Aussie sides are cannon fodder and how many times can the kiwi sides play each other a year before people get bored

there’s a large void at club level in nz which the nrl can take advantage of

the nzru are idiots neglecting super rugby to focus on internationals but that’s our gain
