As is par for the course of this thread there's incorrect facts in this post - Fitzy didn't tour in 1984 and him and Mex never played in an AB team together. Your memory is playing tricks on you. ;)

But, as to the main point of your post, if you don't like rugby anymore then yeah no point watching it. I don't like Origin so don't watch it.
Thats fair, I haven't looked at it in over 30 years so I was guessing haha.
I'll get it out in a few days and correct myself!

Correct me if I'm wrong, but from what I'd been told League has neither had a strong presence in schools. A lot of kids in Auckland play Rugby for their school and League for a club on the w.e?

Traditionally yes that has been the case, play Rugby on Saturday and League on Sunday. Although there are some schools that are League schools.

I think it's measuring participation of school aged, not whether they play for school teams. I've used this example earlier to highlight the dire situation - when I played league on Sundays at high school (rugby was Saturday) in Hawkes Bay there were 4/5 teams in the comp, now they barely can field two teams and our region doesn't even feature in the latest NZRL annual report despite the fact the chair in the region is famous Kiwi enforcer Kevin Tamati. To give even more perspective between Hastings Boys and Napier Boys schools one of them has either won or contested the final in the past 5 national rugby schoolboys competitions. Which is to say there's talent in the region that league should be tapping into but isn't.

This.

School sports participation in NZ 2022: And thankfully these are real participation numbers, not just one off experiences! RL ranks 20th. If you include Touch and RL together it ranks 7th. ARLC and NZRL really need to get Touch aligned like they have in Aus!

I don't like Origin much anymore either.
Hey I found the programme, of course I mixed up Andy Dalton with Fitzpatrick.... both hookers and Captains.
I took a pic for you. Bloody great side!

The New Zealand Warriors have announced plans to field five junior development teams across the Harold Matthews Cup (U17s) and Jersey Flegg (U21) competitions in 2024 - with a sixth team to be introduced in 2025.

After three seasons without any development squads due to COVID restrictions, New Zealand is returning to the NSW Cup and SG Ball Cup (U19s) and club CEO Cameron George was excited to announce the club's proposed pathways structure.

“This is the next major step forward in resetting the club after being away from home for three years,” George said in a club statement.

“From having no development teams – just our NRL side – we're now aiming to have a total of five teams next year and six from 2025.

“Historically it's the biggest investment in development and pathways we've ever had. It also aligns perfectly with our strategic partnership with the Pasifika Aotearoa Collective."

In addition to the Warriors' return to NSW Cup, New Zealand is looking to break back into the NRLW since the club was forced to withdraw from the competition in 2021.

But but but we’ve been told nz juniors are collapsing

are they planning to get cardboard cut outs of Stacey jones to fill out these teams

this is the kind of junior development that produces nrl players

nz2 would double this

Touch Australia said the same for many years, its amazing what a few 0's can do!

What a coward, doesn't address the collapsing figures in Auckland the single biggest League market in the country.

And where are those 0's coming from, not from the NZRL thats for sure.

Its clear the NZRL, ARLC and warriors are going to do just that.

Investment in NZ by ARLC. They've reaped the rewards of NZ players for decades, now they are flush with cash its time they put back in. At the very least the $32mill they are getting from SkyNZ from this year. $18mill to Warriors, $14mill to NZRL should be the go.

Should be the go does not equate to WILL be the go. Promises like this have been made before and just as quickly broken.

And that's into League infrastructure not towards Touch.

I'm certainly not holding my breath for sure! When it comes to addressing grass roots issues the current ARLC leadership seem sadly lacking. Even worse when it comes to supporting the game we take so much from in NZ. I was staggered out how little funding the NZRL get from the ARLC. Why the ARLC wouldnt throw them a bone I dont know. The benefits for the game would be enormous.

For the number of kids playing the game in NZ the amount of talent that comes through to the NRL is massive. That they have to leave home when kids to achieve that needs addressing.

The same reason as always. Self Interest. The clubs and players get the money, like wally and his boyfriend, the ARLC aren't interested in growing the game in NZ, they only want to keep the supply of players coming. The clubs are happy to grab the odd player and develop them at little cost, they don't want to spend their millions developing the game here.

TBh the same applies in Australia! Ive heard that NRLWA have had their funding cut and had to abandon the SG ball program. 2021 there was a $25mill blackhole in grassroots funding. Im all for sustainable clubs and well paid players but cant be at the expense of growing the game at the bottom of the triangle.

We use league and rugby in NZ. We're an intelligent enough community here that I was confident everyone on this thread knows what I'm talking about. Maybe my confidence is miss-placed?

This is a nonsensical statement.
Calling union rugby is presumptuous

both league and union are rugby codes
