New Zealand 2 will deal a massive blow to NZ rugby

Why don't the Warriors sign the union players?
It is a risk vs reward thing, and until recently we wouldn't really have been able to offer to much more than what union players were already getting. In reality (and I don't know anything about current NZ union so happy to be proven wrong) but I cant see how any Union player would be worth a million plus purely based on on field performance given that half of our current million dollar players seem to be more of a hinderance than benefit in creating a championship team.

Off field, and for a new NZ team, that is a different matter and would more than likely be worth the revenue and general awareness it generates.

But in saying that they have poached some union juniors over the years and that is where we sure really be aiming to out compete them.

Doesn't matter how I sound to you.
You're probably some old flanker holding on to the glory days with your schoolboy chums, you're just not capable of understanding this from a purely spectacle perspective.
Union is boring and slow with too many stoppages.
Even they know it and are always having meetings to try a speed it up, have more try and less stoppages..
Basically either League takes over or Union changes to be more like league.

Lol. Everybody thinks their sport is the most exciting. Victoria & NZ exposed to league for years. How's that theory going?!

Great! still growing!. New Zealanders are more represented in professional Rugby league than in any time in history! and the Melbourne Storm are the most watched NRL team in the league!

Nzrl revenue $8million
nzru revenue $188million

anyone who thinks nz2 will somehow make a dent in union in nz is having a laugh,

In all seriousness though the Warriors lack of success is the biggest hinderance to the idea of a second NZ side.

I would be in favour of a second side over there but you would like to see the Warriors gain some success firstly which would then engender some positive press or expectation for a second side.

Also, league will never take over union in NZ. But it can carve out a good niche.

Nz rugby fans aren't going to swap support for league. An NRL side may carve niche, but reminds me of afl thinking indigenous community in western sydney was just going to switch to new side there. Just patronizing arrogance with little knowledge of locals
Yes they will

you’re wrong on this one

kiwis love running rugby

that’s rugby league

we literally got the idea for the rules of rugby league from the all blacks

Getting rid of the sa teams basically killed off super rugby

New Zealand is a small market in population terms and more so in gdp

it can’t compete with the rugby (league) market in Australia

we should use our financial strength to squash them like a bug

a second team is important but so is a higher salary cap. 12.5 million is a good number for now but 15 milllion plus would bankrupt union

the arlc could also allow all black players to be salary cap exempt

the arlc is looking at taking over the pacific which it should already have done by now. It’s a very realistic goal

the all blacks will have to rely on players playing in England and France with the nrl taking over as the benchmark club rugby competition.

That's unfair on NZ Rugby League as a whole.

If expansion was run by that kinda yardstick, we might not be adding a 2nd Brisbane team while the Broncos are stuck around mid-table.

It's NOT a forgone conclusion that a Wellington or Christchurch NRL club will be as woeful & underperforming as the Warriors have been.

That being said, IMO Perth is the best choice for team 18 - just a far bigger population base & economy than any NZ 2 club can offer.. but NZ 2 surely should follow as team 19.

There's some delusion going on in this thread. NZ2 will barely dent NZ rugby. League, soccer, and basketball can't crush it if they want to.

The discussion about salary cap figures is pretty irrelevant, all NZ rugby players can earn more money overseas or in other sports but the lure of the ABs more often than not trumps that. Furthermore representative contracts don't factor into Super rugby salary caps.

It would be good though if a NZ2 side was actually a proper NZ side and not a shit show like the Warriors. Hopefully the NZ2 would not completely overlook all the talented players in the country.

I agree with you personally however, I think the idea though in terms of perception will be hard to overcome so long as the Warriors are performing poorly. It also makes the argument that some people are making that we can simply plunder union ranks a little ridiculous when the Warriors haven’t managed to do anything of the sort.

I guess the counter argument would be that a second side might be the push the Warriors need.

Not sure about having 2 NZRL teams in the NRL as the Warriors are not setting the world on fire as it is.

Harder for RU Forwards to adapt to RL than it is for RU Backs- Ditto for RL Forwards adapting to RU

How many RU forwards were a success in League compared to RU Backs

Look, the All Blacks are hugely popular but under that their is Super Rugby and then the NPC. The NRL is a lot bigger than these comps and has far more money. It's not the same as the AFL trying to supplant the NRL in Western Sydney or QLD where both comps are basically on equal footing....
