It is a risk vs reward thing, and until recently we wouldn't really have been able to offer to much more than what union players were already getting. In reality (and I don't know anything about current NZ union so happy to be proven wrong) but I cant see how any Union player would be worth a million plus purely based on on field performance given that half of our current million dollar players seem to be more of a hinderance than benefit in creating a championship team. Why don't the Warriors sign the union players?
Off field, and for a new NZ team, that is a different matter and would more than likely be worth the revenue and general awareness it generates.
But in saying that they have poached some union juniors over the years and that is where we sure really be aiming to out compete them.
