You think they won't see the value in 10K aussies flying in for the game
& what they'll spend ?

read it as read... they'll pay for it & pay plenty too
Auckland council will stump up 10 million aud to host it readily

it’ll sell out in minutes

And once again you show just how little you know about anything in NZ.

Auckland CIty Council wont be paying for anything that is not considered essential spending. They even had to sell some of their stake in the Auckland Airport to keep the rates increase to below 8%.

10K Aussies flying in? big f**king deal, that wont do shit if the outlay is in the millions. the ACC is in the hole for billions in lost revenue and hundreds of millions on infrastructure repair, all because of flooding and Cyclone damage.
They are led by a mayor who has stated he will cut spending in all areas not increase it. A mayor who wont see any value in a vanity project that will cost tens of millions for SFA return.

Even the NZ Govt has coped it for the 50 million spend on the woman's world cup, and that will be bigger than any SOO by orders of magnitude.

Don't something like 600k Aussies a year visit NZ?

Be hard to justify spending millions for a few thousand extra. The time zone kills it anyway

Out of interest mate, why is going for an intercept a sin bin in Rugby?

Why havent they bid already? the article is pay walled, where does the $100mill come into it?
I think the Australian has it not paywalled. It can't happen for at least 3 years as they're already locked into Melbourne etc until then.

It's not, but you've got have a legitimate chance of getting it, if you just slap it down with no chance of catching that's a sinbin as a professional foul.

If the nrl does award Auckland an origin game and the next World Cup goes to nz then it’s obvious the arlc will be looking to add nz2 as well

Has that always been the rule?
For quite a while yeah.

not sure how much Auckland city council would directly benefit from origin - Eden Park is owned by a trust board so revenue from tickets/ground hire doesn’t go directly into council coffers and other revenue would be difficult to quantify.
Plus it’d be difficult for TV if it stays on a Wednesday - Channel 9 will want an 8pm kickoff but nobody in NZ will want to host at that time as it’s 10pm on a weeknight there.

Yep, 10K for a few days will not justify spends tens of millions of money they don't have. And the Budget is locked in to at least 2031.

As for the attempted intercept, it wasn't from what i can gather since i didn't watch the game. But in going for an intercept you have to make a legitimate attempt to actually intercept the ball, if you deliberately knock the ball on its a penalty. If it prevents a try its a penalty try. When an offense is committed that results in a penalty try then the offender is automatically sin binned.

one option for timeslot could be moving the game to a Thursday night as there a public holiday (Matariki) in NZ that falls in early July and is observed on a Friday, which would make a late kickoff more acceptable. Could double it up with a Friday night Warriors game on the actual public holiday
