It’s a weird counter argument. He was generally right (as much as it pains me to say it) but he was talking absolute crap there
If there's one thing I've learned from my time observing the rugby league community (fans, media figures, and management), is that most people in our sport react irrationally when someone suggests we could learn lessons from what other codes have done.

Especially when the lesson is "they did this, and it was successful - more successful than what we have.. so maybe we can apply some of that to our game".

Yes but most are comparing AFL to NRL even though the demographics are completely wrong, their is more athletes involed, there is a draft in theirs and they play a shit brand of knock on footy

Yeah nobody ever claimed that Loz was a deep thinker or particularly articulate, but his general thesis was accurate.

Afl get 100000 every game in Melbourne? - demonstrably false.
Afl get 50000 in Sydney? Demonstrably false.
Nobody would watch an Nrl game in Perth? Demonstrably false.
Dusty Martin is the biggest star in NZ outside the All Blacks? Utter bull shit.
The afl can play anywhere and sellout? Absolute nonsense.
His thesis? Complete and utter rubbish.,

You Can’t rely on crowd or membership figures

how many of the crowd at the mcg games are members and get in for free. How many get in on cheap or freebies

ratings are clearly measured

afl has higher revenue. That’s the only clear metric they win

you just can’t get past 15 nrl teams getting much higher ratings than 18 afl teams

His thesis is that the AFL is more commercially successful than the NRL, and that's undeniably the case even if he's not equip to make it.

Take Laurie and swap him with somebody that's a little more articulate, better informed of the data, and more comfortable in making and debating their point, and it doesn't even make the news because he wouldn't be saying anything we don't already know.

Simplifying for sake of brevity; the only major statistic the NRL has over the AFL is average ratings, other than that everything goes the AFL's way. Attendance, members and season ticket holders, broadcast rights value, revenue, financial assets, sponsorship value, government investment, participation, brand recognition, cultural impact, etc, etc, broadly speaking it's all in the AFL's favour.

Pretending that isn't the case does nothing to change it, if you're concerned about that state of affairs in the first place. In my opinion obsessing over others success instead of working to incrementally improve yourself does more harm than good.

"I can't be wrong if I chose to ignore anything that doesn't affirm my preconceived biases" lol.

I debate those that deserve it, and you have to be wilfully ignorant to believe that the above wasn't the position that Loz was trying to articulate in a broad sense.

A poor argument for a position doesn't necessarily make that position wrong. For example, the fact that most people can't explain how gravity works doesn't mean that it doesn't exist.
