New Zealand 2 will deal a massive blow to NZ rugby

If the money is there definitely but I fear another lion red/bartercard cup style competition would haemorrhage money.

it would appear that the kiwi public will only support professional teams in the big competitions like super rugby and NRL.
yeah - I think that is the next step for RL in NZ before getting another NRL - getting some sort of national 2nd tier comp.
Maybe step one is a shorter rep season based on the top players in the local competitions

If they don't all ready have them in place, national U16/18/20 competition as a showcase to the Warriors and other NRL clubs would also be a good step

Someone was always going to pop there head up in NZ for another team. It's great news, 2030 may not be overly ambitious but it's cautious.
I think if the NRL came out and made a statement saying that NZ2 will definitely be team 18 or either 19 or 20 then this would get the ball rolling in terms of individual backers and consortiums coming forward with their cases.

until we get a clear statement from the NRL everyone is in the dark including fans and any potential bidding groups.

Personally speaking I’d like to see a South Island team created entering jersey flegg and sg ball sides into the NSW competitions over any national 2nd tier competition for the simple reason of the large drop off numbers at open age level.

warriors have largely been a basket case for most of their existence and only have an overall crowd avg of 14.1k. I’m not sure cannibalising their fan and corporate base is a good idea just because they’ve finally had a good season!
The cannibalising myth was put to bed with the Dolphins. There's no reason why league fans can't support both and draw in new fans also. The more I think about it, Auckland 2 is by far and away the best option for NZ. 1.7M people, way higher than the next biggest NZ market, the 4th largest city in our region of the world and RL has a solid foothold.

I'd look at basing them at Mt Smart alongside the Warriors and using both clubs to execute a NZ wide strategy. 8 games each in Auckland and one games each in Christchurch, Wellington, Hamilton and Dunedin

Well this has merit, but better to give them their own identity and base them in waikato, this will give them localised support from BoP aswell as Auckland

Auckland isn’t brisbane and the warriors aren’t the broncos!

Why would somebody who doesn’t already go to Mt smart and support the warriors suddenly decide to do so to support another Auckland based NRL team playing out of the same stadium?

I'm not sure that there's demand for a second club in Auckland. Splitting games like that would murder both club's season ticket numbers as well.

BTW, any "fan" who supports both teams in a city is a dickhead bandwagoner who is hedging their bets. Imagine a person claiming to be both a e.g. City and Utd fan lol, they'd deserve everything they got.

What's your opinion on Hull having two teams?

The city has 267k people.

21,134 active fans.

Hull FC 12,364
Hull KR 8,770

Hull sure as shit isn't Brisbane or Auckland either, nor is the English RL market comparable to the Trans-Tasman one. Market pressures on RL in England and the UK make trying to compare the SL to the NRL pretty pointless these days. RL in Australia is just on a whole different level to RL in England unfortunately.

In an ideal world the ESL probably wouldn't have two teams in Hull, it may not have a team in Hull at all if RL got big enough, but we don't live in an ideal world, and English RL is struggling and has to do what they can with what they have.

Hull KR are 141 years old while their cross city neighbours hull fc are 158 years old.

family tradition no doubt plays a huge part in which club a son or daughter supports.

I can only see our game growing in the South Pacific. RU has grown so big in Europe it's impossible for our game to ever be anything but niche in England.

Exactly. Longterm fans have an emotional connection with their club. I wish PR would understand that's why I feel so strongly about BRL clubs and resent his dismissive attitude towards their history. He wants to demote the Queensland Cup to third tier status by introducing reserve grade and not allow any more clubs, like the Brisbane Tigers, to progress to the NRL. All in the name of "expansion". He wouldn't like it if his club was thrown on the scrapheap in the name of progress.

It's why I no longer call for rationalisation of Sydney. I was selfish and bitter like PR for too long.

You have to admire and respect the time and money RU put into developing nations which is starting to pay dividends in places like Portugal and Spain.

im sure I also read somewhere that there’s a big push by RU to establish the game in Germany and the Netherlands as well.

I know it’s only sport and maybe using a word like distressing is a bit strong and over the top but that’s how I feel sometimes when I see RU expanding in Europe and all over the world in fact in the USA, uruguay and chile etc whilst rugby league is struggling outside of the NRL and maybe PNG and New Zealand.

I’m going to agree with you and then in the same sentence sound like a hypocrite but I’d love to see a team like the Brisbane Tigers in the NRL but can only see it happening at the expense of the west tigers.

id demerge the west tigers and send the balmain tigers half to Brisbane and relocate the wests half back to campbelltown to become the western magpies.

I talk with people from Malaysia. Their children play RU. The game has definitely grown into a truly international sport.

RU is dead in Australia. It's on the decline in New Zealand. There's an opening for RL to increase its marketshare in New Zealand.

It would be funny if the Brisbane Tigers merged with Souths Logan Magpies to become the Brisbane Magpies. Only in rugby league could something like this happen.
