Turns out his brother had already made the switch

this drain in kiwi union talent is obviously having an impact
“Tyrone Thompson, the brother of Knights prop Leo, is reportedly set to make a cross-code switch and join the Newcastle club.

Tyrone is reportedly in line to be selected in the All Blacks squad after touring with the team at the end of 2022 and featuring against Barbarians.

The 23-year-old was left out of the World Cup squad and according to The Daily Telegraph, will now sign with the Knights once his All Blacks contract expires.

Both Leo and Tyrone were standout players coming through New Zealand’s rugby union pathways programs.

Leo then made the switch to rugby league and signed with the Raiders before he made the move to Newcastl”

this is the kind of players we should be targeting

standout schoolboy stars

Mate, I gave you info about this in the other thread. His brother was an "amateur" club rugby player in the backs before switching.

He was a good schools player but hadn't kicked on but has turned into a fine league player.

@Wb1234's feelings don't care about your facts. He'll be along soon to tell you that you don't understand how rugby works in NZ.

Lol there’s no such thing as an “All Black contract” all players are centrally contracted to NZRU. It’s akin to a nsw cup/emerging NRL player being a “Kangaroos star set to sign once Kangaroos contract expires” it’s built up to be more significant than it is

Hey if it bankrupts the Aru and forces the nzru to spend hundreds of thousands more on players then budgeted that’s a win for rugby league
So far none of the players that RU would really go out of their way to hold onto have been Australian or Kiwi, not even Mark Nawaqanitawase really.

Henry Arundell (Pom) is the only established player of genuine note on the global scene whose signing to the NRL might have shaken RU a little bit. Had he jumped it would have proved that the NRL is capable of drawing current internationals in their prime from outside of the Pacific region, but there was no chance of him ever joining an NRL club, and he and his management quickly turned down any interest that might have existed.

Aside from those two the rest of the names I've seen linked to the NRL are players who haven't established themselves at the pro level yet, has-beens, and never-weres.

most established union players are nothing special anyway and would probably make average. First graders at best

Well, A-League have taken the plunge and confirmed an Auckland Men's A-league team to debut next season (2024/5) and Auckland Women's team the following season (2025/6).

Come on NRL, you know what to do. ;)

Given Wellington’s crowd average has been around the 5k mark it’s amazing soccer has added another nz team

a second nz nrl side should be a non brainer with the warriors averaging four times that and their tv deal with the nrl worth more than the entire a league tv deal with paramount and ten

You don't have a clue about other sports do you Wally?
Do you think RL is more popular than Soccer in Nz? Yes or No

Yeah he's the next big thing, but how often does the next big thing actually turn out to genuinely be the next big thing?!

He's also already turned down more lucrative offers from RL, specifically from the Roosters, at least a couple times, and I see no reason why that suddenly changes now unless RL offers massive overs or he starts struggling in RU, neither of which would be ideal.
