But the context being missed here is that Brisbane is RL heartland and is twice the size of Auckland and 8 times bigger than Chi town.

I don’t think the cannibalism argument really applies too much to a Christchurch team due to the geographical distance involved, but the market size concern re Christchurch is certainly valid.

Welly's probably a better option for NZ2 than CHCH anyway IMO. Strong league scene down there with tons of kids playing both codes over the weekend.

Either way you have an effective supporter catchment of about 500k in terms of the population that are close enough to regularly attend games, and other southerners would still support a Christchurch team over an Auckland based one.
