Only because the ARL put an Albatross around its neck. Then SL war came and costs were just crazy. I was talking to someone last week who was in the Reds academy. In 1994 they signed him on a 2 year contract for $26k. In 1996 News ltd owned Reds called him back into the office and offered him an extra $76k just to sign on for one more year! That was sht load of money for a 18 year old back then. By his own admission he wasnt that good and unlikely to ever make first grade. Thats how nuts the Rl world was in those days.
I very much doubt there was any club in the country who was sustainable with the inflationary sht that was happening due to the war. We can only guess what might have happened if there had been no war, we will never know. What we do know is that in the early 1990's RL was absolutely booming in WA. And now it isnt.
RL was never that strong in WA. The hype leading up to the Reds' introduction led to the game getting more attention from the public, but that doesn't mean it was bound to last forever.
The same thing happened with the Force in 2007. When the hype dissipated the support dropped back to what it was before their entry.
NBL went through a boom period in the early 90s. So did the A-League and BBL.
Fumbleball in Brisbane experienced a similar drop off after the Lions went from champions to also-rans. It's never recovered from where it was 20 years ago.
