New Zealand 2 will deal a massive blow to NZ rugby

Really? I don't understand the nastiness of being happy about the potential of a bunch of people losing their jobs (not just the players who mostly wont have trouble finding new contracts) just because you don't like the sport. I don't like soccer but I don't want to see the Wellington Phoenix go under.

But to try and get some relevance back into this thread, NZR wanted Oz to drop some teams for Super so they likely wont have an issue if the Rebels go under.

Australia cannot support five RU teams. The game would be stronger with just the Reds, Waratahs and Brumbies. It might even need to get rid of the Brumbies.

A-League expansion has f**ked that code.

Why would it?

Without Super League the Reds would have failed to finish the 1996 season. The club was broke and relied on funding from News Ltd to pay their players.
I doubt there was many areas that RL was impacted as badly by SL war as WA. We lost half a dozen amatuer clubs within a couple of years, we lost over 9000 grassroots players in 5 years, we lost the top tier club we had been building towards for nearly a decade, we lost money backers of WARL clubs and so it went on. and 27 years later we are nowhere near close to having rebuilt what was lost. So cry me a river about SL and Brisbane.

All because of a club in Brisbane and Brisbanes shts with Sydney.

As some one who was alive anld living in Brisbane in the 1990s I remember the period well. People were upset with the Super League fallout. There was serious concern over the game's survival.

Crowds for the Broncos fell away in 1996 and 1997.

AFL benefited from the fallout in Sydney and Brisbane. You wouldn't know as you weren't here when it happened.
Agreed

you could see it at the raiders too

you could tell many fans of super league clubs weren’t happy to return

heck dane still isn’t happy

The Reds' model was unsustainable from day one. After the hype leading into their debut dissipated their support dropped significantly. It was a bit like the NBL boom in the early 90s. Just like the NBL, the hype died down and the bandwagon supporters who were interested because it was something new tuned out because they didn't like what they saw.

The biggest problem for the Reds is they spent more money than they generated from football operations. There wasn't enough support from the public. After the hype of the Reds' first game people turned their attention to the Dockers and Eagles.

Only because the ARL put an Albatross around its neck. Then SL war came and costs were just crazy. I was talking to someone last week who was in the Reds academy. In 1994 they signed him on a 2 year contract for $26k. In 1996 News ltd owned Reds called him back into the office and offered him an extra $76k just to sign on for one more year! That was sht load of money for a 18 year old back then. By his own admission he wasnt that good and unlikely to ever make first grade. Thats how nuts the Rl world was in those days.

I very much doubt there was any club in the country who was sustainable with the inflationary sht that was happening due to the war. We can only guess what might have happened if there had been no war, we will never know. What we do know is that in the early 1990's RL was absolutely booming in WA. And now it isnt.

Reds should’ve been loyal to the people that created them

Another bludger union club using money that should go tax payers on players

this would see the aru in breach of their tv contract
Normally I take no joy in clubs falling over, its the fans that suffer.
But as its union hahah f**k them, happy to pss on their grave.

My apologies, I didn't realise you were saying it for the good of the game. :)
When it comes to the ARU I have bitter-sweet memories. I remember John O'Neil trying to kill rugby league in the early 2000s. When he got a job as the CEO of the major sponsor of Souffs he pulled the deal out of spite. Things like that have played a role in RU's demise over the last 20 years.

Catalans manage it in super league with a way smaller budget
Not sure if you know what actually happened? Having talked to a number of people involved back then Ive got a pretty good first account history of the goings on.

Catalans manage what?

Pay away teams travel and accomodation

heck they have to pay a bond of 500k to play in the cup and they manage that too
Catalans dont pay travel of other clubs, and certainly not 3 teams worth per club as Reds were forced to do.
