Be
Not sure his misleading, borderline fraudulent dealings, were common knowledge re the money aspects?
Before the gtc caused his property development to fail the nrl liked him so much they appointed him to do a repeat about expansion

Could a potential South Island NRL team maybe team up with energy drinks giant company Red bull and become the “South Island Red bulls”?
I’m sure CANTERBURY BULLdogs won’t have any problem with a team based in CANTERBURY named BULLS
Chuck in some sleeping pills and you’d get a few ex Warriors to play for them ;)

exactly and neither will RL in New Zealand.

100%.

can definitely see a situation where RL in NZ is #1 domestically and RU is #1 internationally if this isn’t the case already but a NZ2 NRL team would definitely cement this position.

I can see New Zealanders supporting three or four NRL clubs and the NPC.

The best thing NZRU can do is shut down Super Rugby and invite two or three Australian clubs to play in the NPC. Local rivalries is what make club sport great.

There's no reason RL and RU cannot co-exist under the right circumstances.

I miss the days when the Bledisloe Cup was an actual contest. I don't think RU will ever get back to that position in Australia. The game tried to expand too quickly and was too antagonistic under John O'Neill. Raiding the NRL was a bastard act that caused a lot of resentment amongst Australians who cared about both sports. RU traditionalists didn't like it, either.

I preferred it when the Reds played at Ballymore. When they went to Lang Park it killed the spirit of the game.

Perth is doable but will have a glass ceiling stifling its growth due to fumbleball's stranglehold on the market. Adelaide is lightyears away from having a team. Anyone who says Adelaide could have a team tomorrow is full of shit.
Michael searle report said the nrl should I focus on the east coast plus nz and png

no surprise now he’s getting involved in an nz bid

This is a hit piece article and the reason why he stopped talking to journalists at that time.
If you go into the comments there's 1 about 4 or 5 in that start by saying they disagree.. they go on to detail, actually detail the scenario and what actually transpired!
If you actually want to know the truth, read that.

Talks way more sense than you

not that’s that’s hard to
Funny how an article that old still makes a hell of a lot of sense.

Sure the current administration have carried out the first expansion since the Titans were added (out of necessity, once Souths readmission gave us an uneven 15 teams, mind you..), but where's the plan beyond that?

All I see is a lot of wind, talking up bid after bid in a positive yet non-committal way.

I'm not sure NZ can sustain 14 (as it is currently) fully professional NPC teams - even if you tack-on 2-3 Australian teams to try and drum-up some international interest (and TV money).

Chances are, if that happens you get contraction of NZ teams.. like say Otago & Southland merging.. (oh, hang on - that's just the Highlanders) or Wellington, Horowhenua-Kapiti & Manawatu (oh hang on, that's halfway towards being the Hurricanes..)

The "appeal to tradition" angle is cool and all, but the more you look a "NPC plus" replacement for Super Rugby rationally, the more it looks like a money-sink in the making.

Saying NZ could support 4 NRL sides is laughably ignorant
I can certainly see 3 happening in the long run: Auckland, Christchurch & Wellington based - whether or not that means some games in minor markets like how the Christchurch bids are looking at taking games to Dunedin.

However a 4th team would have to be either Hamilton-Bay of Plenty OR Auckland 2, and although the Warriors may grudgingly accept Christchurch & Wellington, they will fight any chance of a 2nd team north of Lake Taupo with a passion.

Yea agree. The game doesn't generate enough money here to support a fully professional NPC. That aside, I dnt think focusing domestically is a good idea in terms of staying competitive internationally.

Why would the NZRU even consider it?

It just seems like it would be just to appease Aussies RL fans.

Surely it's still the biggest code in NZ in terms of media coverage, sponsorship, crowds etc.
