If the NRL were bold and had any vision at all theyd be aiming to christen te kaha stadium with a blockbuster all New Zealand rugby league NRL derby between the warriors and the kea/bulls/whoever.
If the South Island gets a team it doesn't matter who they play there, it'll sell out the first few games.

Hope not. Agree it'd make a great story but even if nz2 got a licence tomorrow a '26 launch gives them only a few more months than the Dolphins did to get started. No way is that enough runway for a start up team.

IMO '27 should be their earliest target date. '28 would give them similar lead in time as the Warriors got.

They wish
Did you even read the article? It’s saying they don’t want a card/player sent to decide the tournament similar to how origin was pretty much a foregone conclusion after 7 minutes.
The way cards are being handed out it’s a valid fear

So no you didn’t read it?
I read it but once again... Origin..
Yes you can damage the wonderful contest that is Origin.
It's a Super Rugby final, it could go from mediocre to.. more mediocre?
It's not the same thing and they should be ashamed by the reference, literally used Origin to get clicks on an article that would otherwise not have been read.

You may be needlessly looking at semantics of wording to try and get a win for league whereas in this very thread there’s comments such as “on par with the NFL”. It’s not about comparing sports it’s siting a recent sporting event that was marred by a ref decision. Not everything is points scoring

It is but nobody knows what’s around the corner in 3-5 years time.

rugby union is still king and the #1 sport in New Zealand whether we like it or not.
Lazarus ?

no chance

Union will always exist in nz and oz but it won’t have the money to compete with nrl

starting nz sooner would be better but reality is it’s Perth or maybe png

but within the next 8 years all 3 will be added

PNG will always be RL mad so they can be team #20 while Perth doesnt really have the same competition with union as New Zealand does so they can be team #19 and NZ2 needs to be team #18 to take full advantage of the current disenchantment super rugby is experiencing and it’s downward trajectory.

It's pretty much dead in Australia. Going the way of the NBL. Made themselves pay TV only just made them out-of-mind-out-of-sight.
What makes you say it is dying in NZ?
Crowds primarily

nz crowds are off around 30 percent from their high

plus the warriors are now the highest rated rugby club in nz on tv

warriors will be the first ever rugby club to sell out a season

but still a long way to go in nz to be number one
