New Zealand 2 will deal a massive blow to NZ rugby

The original team bidding for a NRL licence in Christchurch insist they are still in the three-bid race despite a prospective personnel change.
Rumours swirled on Tuesday that the South Island NRL Bid (SINRLB) was no longer in the hunt after it had shut down its website.
But chief executive Tony Kidd told The Press “we are still a team and are still putting in a bid, but there may be some people going from our team’’.

He said the website was down while they “work through a few things”, but its social media accounts were still active.
I wouldn't be surprised if the personnel change for the SINRL bid is to position itself to talk with the Kea AND the Orca bids, and they'll soon throw their lot in with one or the other.

Wasn't Moffat reluctant to talk to the SINRL big because he didn't like some of those involved with it?

“We’ve demonstrated that we have the financial backing, business and football expertise to deliver a successful NRL club for Christchurch and southern New Zealand, but we would welcome aboard the other bids to lend their support and skill sets.”

Funny he doesn’t mention Wellington. Interesting
The SINRL big & the Keas bid are South Island bids - they've NEVER claimed to be inclusive of Wellington, or anywhere else in the North Island.

That's only part of the Orcas plan.. and if the Orcas want to team up with either of the other two, somethings got to give with respect to this issue.

The Warriors are a poorly run club

That doesn’t mean Christchurch will be

As in super rugby they have a habit of showing up richer / bigger Auckland

It depends on the coach, football dept and board
Warriors admin has gotten pretty solid last few years but you’re right in that it has had a series of poor admins. Also correct that a good set up in CHCH could be successful but looking at the 2 bids the both have drivers of poor Warriors results involved

Not getting Madge as coach when he wanted the job was a huge blunder

Could’ve been the best coach warriors have ever had

I think there is an element of wishful thinking happening here …I could say that if adding NZ2 is going to destroy Rugby in NZ, then what are they waiting for ? Should have happened by now right ?

Even if they get the nod now, the NRL doesn’t even want to bring them in for another 6-7 years supposedly ….doesnt seem like they are in a hurry to kill Union over there!
I'm not arguing that adding a second NZ team will destroy Union, I'm arguing that a NZ only domestic comp isn't viable. Did you reply to the wrong person?

On the topic of NRL v NZRU, we are already on the path to taking them out, a second NZ will only help with the inevitable, and of course some form of NZ RL sustained success.

What evidence do you have that "we are already on the path to taking them out"?

You and your buddies always make these comments but not sure what metrics you're using.

Sorry... I forgot this was a touchy subject for Union lovers.

The NRL is on an unprecedented surge in NZ at the moment and the NZRU is on an unprecedented slide. There's evidence of both of those things everywhere.

As this thread has progressed over the last couple of years, all the things the Union defenders said would never happen have happened. At this point only the blind or blatant deniers can't see that the NZ market is ripe for a massive shift between the codes. It's not going to happen this year or next but will slowly continue happen over the next couple of decades. Enjoy 😊

This is just more waffle. Surely you can come up with something concrete? What's this evidence that's everywhere?

Women's game

All have NRL trending up and RU trending down in NZ. But you knew that already
Player numbers - rugby player numbers have increased this year too, including in the key demo of teenage boys, and from a much higher base number. Furthermore part of the league increase includes players in a one off schools tournament. There is as many teenage rugby players in NZ as there are league players in total.
Ratings - Super rugby ratings increased by a similar % to league as well. Furthermore, every media release on league figures is from May so we don't know if the ratings held up through the year when the Warriors weren't doing as well as in 2023.
General interest - what is this? How do you measure it? Tik Tok?
Women's game - Both league and rugby have growing women's rugby player numbers.

Attendances - at Warriors games is the only legitimate one on your list.

How about things like the domestic/grassroots game? The premier comp in Chch where the new team is coming has the least amount of teams they've ever had. Other regions, like where I'm from are still dormant. Schools league is dwarfed by rugby.

I know you want it to be the way you think, but that's just not a realistic take on how things are.

Union is not at its lowest ebb with not much change on the horizon? NRL isn't at its highest ebb with heaps of upside to come? Keep up that denial mate. It's going to be a rough ride for you.

There was a recent poll which showed rugby league dominated union for kids under 16? Or so

You can see on social media how much league dominates
