Moffatt knows his is a losing bid now and needs something like this to overtake the orcas
Precisely this - it has all the hallmarks of some mad "Hail Mary" pass to try and snatch the expansion spot from the Orcas.

He saw the buzz that Perth+Bears (and to a degree Ipswich+Newtown) got, and figured this was his chance to get in the good-books of Vlandys.

The easiest solution is merging with easts tigers
Not really. The biggest issue facing Balmain right now is their minority share and control within Wests Tigers. Merging with Easts Tigers solves nothing because Easts will again be the majority share holder of theoretical East Coast Tigers club.

Sure, they would still remain as “Tigers” branded so that wouldn’t change. However instead of sharing games with Campbelltown some 53/54kms down the road they would instead share them with Brisbane some 918kms up the road.

I believe the Newtown/Ipswich chat was that Ipswich would control all operations and base them out of Sth Qld with only the jersey colour changing to Newtown blue when they played in Sydney. Whilst Bears NRL operations would be solely based in Perth. I only make this statement incase people try to compare the 3 situations, which are clearly under entirely different circumstances.

What you’re suggesting wouldn’t work because it’s already not working now between two companies/clubs/entities 54kms apart. I fail to see Balmain entertaining moving even further away from their traditional heartland for lesser ownership, power, control etc.

NZ 2 is even more far fetched than Brisbane. But who knows, weird things happen all the time in rugby league.

As an ex Balmain fan I would love this (not sure what wests tigers fans would think)

And how many games at leichardt oval ? Nz2 already has a lot of places to cover

Since it’s the mole who reported it the chances of this happening are zero

would there be a club from either qld and nsw that could be part of a nz2 franchise to potentially strengthen it and get it across the line? not that I like nz2 needs it. unlike west aussies they have a strong footy background even if it isn’t necessarily league. after all it’s easier for a rugby kid to transition to league than an Aussie rules kid.

Slightly off topic but gee it’s hard to get any meaningful data on participation in NZ. The websites of the comps are awful and almost unmanageable as far as working out team numbers. The Auckland comp is clearly the biggest with over 30 clubs but the website is a dogs breakfast. The Play Rugby League site used here in Australia is terrific. It captures nearly every comp and makes life a lot easier.
I know the cheer squad here loves little articles telling us league now threatens union over there but it’s not possible to do any meaningful analysis of real numbers of players or even find where all the comps are and who is playing in them.
Raises a serious question about the management of the game there. Which also raises questions about how the NZRL will handle two clubs playing out of NZ in the NRL.
To me, on the face of it, the game needs a massive overhaul over there to meet its potential or even be taken seriously below the professional level.
Am I right or talking shite as usual?

Good question.

Honestly, maybe Norths Devils. They’re a magnificent club in their own right and seemingly get lost in the chit chatter due to them being happy to stay in their own lane and not bidding to enter NRL (at least right now…)

They do have commercial resources including 2 leagues clubs (one in Nundah and one in Kallangur) which goes unnoticed. Great junior pathways and programs. They really are the silent achiever (yet always challenge for Q-Cup premierships, so are they really silent? Maybe more so commercially speaking I guess).

Southern Devils, South Island Devil, Christchurch Devils now there’s a brand for you. All hypothetical of course.

Hit the nail on the head there, what most NZers on here have been advocating for is the increased professionalism of the local game at grassroots level roots and administration level- it’s been raised as a concern of NZ2 as they need a strong foundation that isn’t currently there to succeed. Make some solid inroads here and it will make a huge difference.
Where I grew up in Hawkes bay it was very easy to play Union, schools had a good comp with dozens of grades and skill levels. League was almost invisible and despite looking only found out through a mate of a mate where I could get a run, turn up and it’s gang riddled with patched members pretty much wanting an opportunity to lay out a teenager- not the most inviting.
Thankfully the NZRL has very little to with the Warriors other than expecting the Warriors to carry the load in being the shop front for league in NZ riding their coattails for free exposure and developing players whilst doing very little themselves

Ironic that Balmain wants to be a partner to an NZ team so a Sydney team can play in black and white ;)
South Island are more parochial and wouldn’t be too happy to have a hand me down team from Australia- particularly given the recent history of the tigers.
Wests look to be better off doing a Manly and going it alone

It’s not Balmain who came up with the idea

Moffatt thinks linking with a foundation nswrl like Balmain will strengthen his bid

Like Perth and norths did

Perth was zero chance without linking with the bears

True, no expansion team deserves that.

Agree with the last paragraph. Get the magpies back and open up the tigers name to any body not associated with Balmain. Balmain are as dead as North Sydney. Parasites.

they’re dead according to you boomer yet they are making grand finals in reserve grade, got multiple league clubs operating on big profits, has nrl wanting them back.

you need to catch up with current events boomer, your info is incredibly outdated and you just sound like an absolute bell end; typical clueless boomer energy 101.

Yeah but of a Hail Mary with Moffatt but as you said it seemingly greased the wheels for Perth so I guess it was worth a shot from his pov.
Can’t see it winning over too many locals as ‘foundation club’ that gets bandied around in Sydney doesn’t hold the same weight outside of Sydney and next to none in NZ- still I guess on the off chance it works local would probably be fine with a hand me down club if the alternative was no team at all and something needs to change in tigertown as it’s not currently working as it is.
Think Perths been a market the NRL has been wanting to get into- it’s the next biggest market where there’s little presence so it at least makes sense to explore just think Norths association negated a lot of the risk.

Then Moffat is deluded. Your club is a carcass. A failure. That’s why you changed from following the tigers to following the Swans and Souths under your previous alts. Surely you remember this?
