From what I understand - Chalmers 'owns (ed)" the name and because he was tied up with Wellington League, the name got sort of "used" for their rep teams - but it is not a Wellington name. But I can understand the confusion it courses.
A great name tho. And they (Orcas) are a common sight all over NZ.
Odd that the Wellington rep team uses the same logo also as the mid ‘00’s bid also, you’d think there was some sort of IP issue?

“If Perth is handed the next licence, which region should be the host of the 20th team?
NZ South Island: 60%
Brisbane: 12%
Central Queensland: 8%
NSW Central Coast: 4%
South-east Queensland: 4%
Auckland: 4%
Melbourne: 4%
19 teams is enough: 4%”

Positive club support.

South Island is the common sense team 20. Keeps Ipswich/Western Corridor up the sleeve in case any teams go down, or for a reliable team 21 to start with if they ever decide to expand again.

Guessing the biggest issue is none of the NZ bids seem to be very good. If the NRL own Perth they’ll probably want to move them on to new ownership before they think about doing the same with a South Island team.
