Darwin-based online betting agency Luxbet has filed proceedings against mining magnate Nathan Tinkler, alleging he owes it more than $136,000.

Documents filed in the Northern Territory Supreme Court state that Luxbet has made numerous attempts to get Mr Tinkler to repay the money.

The owner of the Newcastle Knights rugby league team has 21 days to respond to the writ.

Last year the Australian Tax Office commenced legal action against Mr Tinkler's Hunter Sports Group, the Newcastle Knights and Newcastle Jets football team, claiming they owed $2.7 million in unpaid taxes.

Luxbet is owned by ASX 100 company Tabcorp Holdings.

Tabcorp Holdings operates TAB Sportsbet in NSW and Victoria.

Sorry to open up old wounds fellas, but if true, this is a sign that something singificant may be about to happen. Remembering Tinkler essentially employs Bennett seperate to the club itself. Not saying Wayne and Darbs will walk but we would have to find money from somewhere to keep them.

Meh I dunno. The frustrating thing about these sort of articles is that it's practically impossible for us to make an informed comment on it. Similar to the Dogs and their cap, for the most part none of us have any idea what is really going on behind the scenes. Tinkler basically stays silent on everything despite the media constantly flinging crap at him, so all we have to go on are his reputation for being a late payer and the fact that he's probably cash-poor.

We went through these sorts of articles last year, and nothing came of it, stuff about how the players weren't getting paid on time etc. The club said just a couple of days ago that they were tired of constantly responding to rumours about this sort of thing, so I doubt we'll get any sort of response from them on this one.

Speculation on these kinds of things I find pointless and I'm honestly a bit sick of it when it comes to our club. Ever since Wayne has arrived there's been rumours that he's leaving early. I'm pretty much at the point now where I almost don't worry about anything unless it's 100% confirmed.

The telegraph are treating people like fools to even suggest that Tinkler's cash flow problems have anything to do with Boyd's 3rd party deals. The NRL have been very strict on this in the past and a 3rd party sponsor can't be a club sponsor and can't be organised by the club. To suggest that our owner is paying the 3rd party deals out of his own pocket and the NRL are allowing it is ridiculous

Whilst I agree with the sentiment, it troubles me that the club and HSG aren't proactively managing the situation.

By that I mean, ensure all entitlements are paid on time, no exceptions. When I sign off on our payroll, if it falls due on a weekend then it gets paid early as people have direct debits etc.

If the bank guarantee is due, get the funding in place, set it up and push the button, don't let the media drive the agenda.

The clubs and HSG actions constantly enable this type of media scrutiny.

The club will be fine either way. New sponsors will be scrambling in to be the good news story that saved the Knights, we'll get the $10mil and we'll keep moving forward. We might need a bit of a shake up in the management department. I don't think Wayne will leave us in the lurch regardless of what happens... in fact I'd wager he'd take a pay cut to stay until the end of his contract. If not, we still have Stoney.

It does have the ability to destabilise our season and write it off on the field, though. That would be disappointing.
