Newcastle name Team of Century

February 09, 2008 NEWCASTLE Rugby League have named a Team of the Century, with Souths legend John Sattler only given a bench role.

The team is comprised entirely of internationals with former Test skipper and Knights great Andrew Johns overlooked as captain in favour of Wally Prigg.

Players under consideration for the side had to have played both junior and senior football in Newcastle.

The immortal Clive Churchill was named at fullback of the side that contained three Knights: Johns, starting front-rower Paul Harragon and Matthew Gidley, who was named on the bench.

Newcastle were a foundation member of the NSWRL in 1908, playing for two seasons before the Newcastle Knights re-entered the competition in 1988.

The side is dominated by players from the 1930s through to the 1960s, a period in which Newcastle produced 40 of its 60 internationals.

They had some quality fullbacks to pick from Clive at No.1, so Carlson in the centres, Johns on the bench.
Satts on the bench, Don Schofield as a run on? hmm.

Al Buman ahead of Danny Buderus?....

Buman was the only one i hadn't heard of/had to look up!. I'd imagine Danny doesn't qualify as he was not Newcastle "juniored" ?. And why not the great Rex Wright anyway!

I didn't read the qualifications..Thanks for pointing them out.
Allan Buman was a good player btw. I think, from memory that Allan had a pub in Tumbarumba after he finished playing football.

Tahu wouldn't think would've qualified. I'm not sure, but I don't think he played juniors in Newcastle. Same with Buderus (being from Taree), Steve Simpson (Singleton), ect.

Chief was an awesome player. Lead with his actions, wore his heart on his sleeve, and in my opinion (and I'd say most people's too) thoroughly deserves his spot in this team.

I feel Matty Johns could possibly have been in that team in place of Bob Banks, but again, that's just my opinion.

I thought he played his junior footy for Central Charlestown. :?

Oh, well. Good side anyway.

Only after he came down from Taree or somewhere up there. It shouldn't have mattered anyway because Newcastle apparently represent the whole North Coast according to some of their fans.

Matt Gidley would have to be the worst "Team of the Century" player out of all that I've seen. So he could flick-pass. Whoop-de-doo. Great team otherwise (from what I've seen and read).

one of the best centres of the late 90's - 2000s.

I’d pick Jim Morgan over the chief any day of the week. Matt Gidley had a great flick pass but his defence was like a revolving door. Interesting team that has two all time great fullbacks. I would have thought Father John Cootes or Terry Pannowitz might have got a start somewhere in the team,
