newcastles next generation will be given another chance to stretch their legs against fiji on sunday despite demonstrating growing pains in a 22-22 draw with the warriors at greymouth, on new zealands south island, on saturday.
Knights coach rick stone included a handful of senior players in a mostly experimental squad for their first pre-season trial, a charity match to raise money for the pike river miners relief fund and the west coast rugby league.
Stone said many of the younger players made mistakes, which was to be expected, and the warriors took advantage to lead 16-0 and 22-6 before the knights rattled home with three late tries, including two in the last four minutes.
we played a lot of young blokes and i know the warriors played plenty of young blokes as well and its a trial for all these young players and we had some good and bad patches, he said.
theres no doubt about it, our ball control was a little bit dicey at times and some of the young blokes didnt take the worlds best options and made some errors that they shouldnt make but all young blokes do.
i would suggest there was a distinct bridge between the blokes that had played first grade and the blokes that hadnt played first grade. Some of the errors that the younger blokes were incurring, obviously its a maturity thing and something well continue to work on.
stone liked what he saw from back-rowers zane tetevano and ethan cook and winger peter matautia and id have to give [australian schoolboys hooker] chad redman a rap also.
hes a kid who just turned 18 in december and two months after his 18th birthday hes playing in an nrl trial and he acquitted himself really well, he said.
Stone said most of the squad used against the warriors would back up against fiji at energyaustralia stadium on sunday, giving them a chance to experience the travel and recovery components of a long-haul away game then returning home to back up a week later.
The coach will keep most of his established players under wraps until nrl trials against penrith at port macquarie on february 19 and cronulla at muswellbrook on february 26.
thats a significant point, that these young blokes get to do that, because the nrl is not just about playing a one-off game, its about preparing yourself to play, dusting yourself off and getting ready to play the next one, so that is really important for us, he said.
Of the more experienced players, stone was pleased with the performances of fullback shannon mcdonnell and prop joel edwards, who scored the first of newcastles four tries. He said stand-in skipper evarn tuimavave led from the front on and off the field.
evarn was great for us all week, he said of the former warriors and kiwi test prop.
he put his hand up to do this trip and has done a massive job for us. He led the boys really well and his performance was pretty good coming back from a ruptured achilles in round 10 last year.
knights 22 (joel edwards, chris houston, chris adams, simon williams tries; peter matautia 3 goals) warriors 22 (glen fisiiahi 2, bill tupou, pita godinet tries; krisnan inu 3 goals) at wingham park, greymouth; nz. Half-time warriors 4-0. Crowd: 6000 (approx). Referees jared maxwell, tony de las heras.
