The Sydney Morning Herald
Dragons on brink of sale to Gordon family

St George Illawarra just days away from being officially sold after the Gordon family tabled an offer that will finally take the famous club off the market.

While the WIN Corporation walked away from the negotiating table last month, company supremo Bruce Gordon and his son Andrew have put a deal on the table on behalf of the family rather than the firm.

The bid, subject to NRL approval, will result in Illawarra’s 50 per cent stake of the joint venture being sold off.

A figure of $10 million has long been bandied about as the number required to make the sale a reality, although it’s understood the value of the deal is structured in a way that takes into account the almost $6 million the club owes to the NRL. It's believed there were also talks about the prospect of another party being involved as a range of ownership structures were discussed.

The game’s governing body has been in high-level talks with the Gordons, as has the club, and a final sign-off is imminent. A deal will bring an end to negotiations between the parties that have gone on for almost two years and will end constant speculation about the club’s ownership structure.

The ownership transition will be the final act of long-serving chief executive Peter Doust, who will finish his tenure at the end of the season. The final negotiations are at a delicate stage, but there appears NO major impediment to the deal being finalised.

The Dragons were preparing to officially put up the 'for sale’ sign after WIN walked away from the negotiating table last month. Several other suitors had shown an interest in purchasing the club, including a Qatari consortium that was fronted by Australian businessman Michael Ibrahim.

However, plans to publicly court buyers were put on hold when Andrew and Bruce Gordon finally put forward an offer that the Dragons hierarchy felt reflected the club’s market value.

I am really nervous about this and would love to see the terms and conditions including the NRLs requirements. Again, we have a decision that smells of the old boys club. We are accepting an offer from a director but have not thought it prudent to seek alternative independent offers.

I wonder who the new CEO is going to be?

We jump down each others throats at times about which player should go, or which one is better, or who should coach the team and the management and governance (and rightly so). This could have far more serious implications than any of these things.

We are talking about giving ownership to a private party (look at Manly) who only buys the Illawarra 50% but may depending upon the terms of the sale have effective control of the whole 100%. This is not fairytale stuff, the same people have already had significant control of the club without owning any of it.

I understand what you are saying.
There was a second consortium as well.
The whole deal is being looked over by the NRL so hopefully everthing is above board.
It would be great for us all to no everything out of the deal.
Like what they intend to do with the club and team in the future.
Also what would happen if they wanted to sell ect.
That kogarah and Wollongong get a even split of games ect

Obviously the Board will be re-structured & out with the Steelers cronies. One would expect a more professional & business savvy structure without any agendas being driven by the old boys brigade.
The appointment of our next CEO and being debt free will have a huge bearing on the clubs direction and future. As fans we should be positive that team and club are finally heading in the right direction.....UP!

Unfortunately there is nothing to say any of this will take place. The Gordon family (through WIN) have basically owned Illawarra via a loan for years and Andrew is a director already. If anything based on history the jobs for the boys will continue and the CEO will be part of the clique.

Yes obviously Andrew Gordon will remain a Director and hold more power, yet I see it more as an opportunity to get rid of the Steelers deadwood like Sean O'Connor etc.
Personally I feel confident that it will be positive and done in accordance with the NRL guidance.

As a total outsider who knows little of the politics of the club compared to others on here like your good self Carlton i too am not really jumping for joy at the moment until all details are put on the table. Can someone explain to me why Win would pull out of the process & then the "owner" of Win then proceed to buy?. Is Andrew Gordon not already on the board & if so, been involved in all of the past failures of management?. I certainly hope we don't end up being another Manly who are poorly run by the Penns.

Can someone explain to me how, if WIN didn’t have the money to continue with the naming rights sponsorship of Kogarah WIN Stadium they have the money to buy half the club?

And does this now give WIN, a Wollongong based company, more say on where and when games are played?
