ESPN/Disney also pay $2.6 Billion per year for MNF. It's on a totally different scale, but if the model works there, it could work here. $80 Million per year is only 3% of that deal.

Yes but every team/market has their own production crew.

What are we looking at $50m for say Monday night game? Production costs are roughly $100k a game.

You are looking at $52m a year. For that to work you need $130 spend from everyone of the 400k viewers.

Cant agree about the current deal … they are on big unders ..

The way the NRL are charging headlong into expansion, and with the clubs already on board apparently after years of pushing back about “cutting up the pie into more slices” … leads me to think they have a good idea already that they are getting significant broadcast increases this time .,. I would suspect that involves a significant new player ( perhaps a streaming service ) getting some of the action

The NRLW was shown at 12pm on a Sat on both Fox and FTA. How many of those games do you think turned a profit?

Sunday games don't, Outside of Origin Thursday night FTA is the only that makes a profit

I have said previously that once the next TV deal is down. With expansion that the overall TV money will be higher than the AFL deal. Bringing expansion forward was huge for the next deal. 2032 on is the question

Their hope is Netflix or Amazon get involved as it is more 'international' now

How much do you think a local provider is paying for PNG games or NZ 2?

Especially if we get the reduced season and have less Broncos, Souths and any of the other bring drawcards?

If these teams are successful, then like Melbourne, people will tune into watch them regardless of where they are from.
In fact, their geographical positioning will only enhance their ability to be marketed and build rivalries.

I get that but Foxtel, Stan etc need people to also buy subs to go with the advertising.

It is impossible for someone in PNG or NZ to get Foxtel, So a local options comes into play and they can't pay as much for the rights.

It is where getting Amazon etc comes into it, They show the cricket but they don't produce it.
NRL isn't set up yet to do that

That’s one of the key issues, the likes of Amazon and YouTube arent interested in producing the sports content, they want to buy it ready made. Unless nrl takes over its own production those mega international streamers aren’t in play.

Correct. If we stay local to get it produced and shown, Then the value is less and less competition.

Especially with the uncertainty of every local player, easy to say in theory that the game should get way more money. Reality says it might not be there.

Especially with wanting to shorten the season, more Broncos games, Souffs games the better. Getting NRLW shown better times.

So I'd rather get less and stay a valuable TV product for longer to buy time to get production in house

Amazon -Cricket
Paramount -A-League
Disney is incorporating a ESPN tile into its home page
Netflix is getting WWE in 2025

NRL will be on one of theee services by 2028.
Fox got into bed with AFL and they’re going to lose a lot of subs if Fox isn’t showing all 9 games by 2028

All of those are produced seperately, That is where NRL needs to go 1st

Can’t see it happening with afl having so many more rounds than league

Origin is basically an additional 3 grand finals in guaranteed ratings. It should make up for a lot of it. But if we really get to a 20 team/19 round season with standalone Origins and a proper international schedule then I couldn't give a shit if the AFL get $100mil more

Season length would be perfect

The issue about being less money than afl that’s a good question

The question becomes how much is 5 extra games worth. Broncos in particular are a ratings winner, Having them play 19 games as opposed to 24. Replaced by PNG who will rate bad.

Does the TV deal even increase?

Good luck getting close to the fumblers deal in any case - News Limited will make sure of it.

Just do what’s best for the game. I would argue for less teams not more at this point in time

Yep. Surely would make more money by separating the NRL & the Origin rights.

Get 7 & 10 bidding for the origin rights.
