So did Nine pay NRL $900mill or $625mill? Did Fox pay the $175mill to NRL or to Nine? Telstra deal includes $50million value of naming rights so they effectively only paid $150mill compared to $250mill to AFL for equivalent period. Score for Telstra!

Seems everyone got a good deal except the fans in this one.

Mr Smith said the number of live games shown on free to air television would increase from two at present to four.
“So there will be more live and free Rugby League on television – and that is what the fans want,” Mr Smith said.

But simulcasting benefits Fox, not the NRL...

I have already answered this,

Of course simulcasting is an advantage for the NRL, it's exposure across more platforms, just by example those in Adelaide didn't get games even on GEM until after midnight and they didn't even have the option of paying for the privilege, now they do, that helps grow the game.

It will end up just shy of 2bn with NZ.

The current deal is not better, delayed games, Monday's, no NRL channel, no simulcasting, no control over draw, less money.

lol I hate to say I told you so but....

less $ than AFL
shter KO times for fans
less FTA covg than AFL
No expansion

Once again RL get screws itself

Come on Doc we need that $ per second of gametime break down to make us feel good!

Meh. Seems pretty decent if it does go up with the addition of another game (assuming that ever happens).

What should the NRL do... Fire him again?

Article from april this year.
Nrl were hoping to get between $1.5b-$2b for their tv rights. Most business experts said $1.3b was a more realistic goal.
Just a year ago their was an article saying the afl were hoping to recieve a $1.5b-$1.6b for 5 years.
Even at the time of the press conference afl reporters were expecting it to be a $2b-$2.2b over 6 years deal.
Both codes have gotten more then expected.
Also take note that the original deal for the afl was $2.2b but extra $300m was seen as a f**k you to the nrl, and was announced as a fund to help push the afl (especially the giants and suns) into queensland and nsw. The afl has been wasting money for years doing this.
Both the nrl and afl deals are huge, better then expected, both are 3 times as large as the next australian sport (cricket, a summer sport not really in competition with either code) and a whopping 9-10 times bigger then rival sports in soccer, union and the v8 supercars

All in all not as big a deal as we were hoping for but still a vast improvement financially on the last deal. Appears Nine has cut itself a good bargain but at least Fox has finally been forced to pay a decent amount for the NRL rights. Will be interesting to know if or what sort of figure has been factored in if expansion occurs in the life of the deal.

The clubs are interested in financial survival. They want up to $13m pa in grants well over the salary cap.
Methinks the deal's monetary side was paramount in the minds of Grant & Co.
If they had got $1.6bn and no Friday night,Grant 's detractors would have had a field day.

Now to discuss expansion and a 9th game

Seems Brisbane 2 and Wellington just firmed as favourites

The way it has played out is that the NRL has left money on the table with the deal agreed between Nine & Smith.

Grant would have signed off on this deal.

Gould, Politis and the others will have him for that eventually and to be blunt, it has proven to be a c**k up...

Grant looked to be a beaten man today at the presser

Grant is not a big business deal person like Smith

Thats why News Ltd wanted Smith gone

On a positive, I think league will pass the AFL when the next deals are done in 2020 or thereabouts. Remember we have given the AFL a free run for near on 20 years due to the super league war and being owned by News. Within a short period we have virtually caught the AFL in terms of the broadcasting deal and finally have large amounts of money to invest into the game which hasn't happened in a long time. League is only currently at half capacity it will grow in the coming years thus increasing it's value. I'm confident we will get past the AFL in the next deal.

Fills a nice scheduling gap, pisses off Perth Red. Wonderful. Maybe the Penn clan will relocate Manly there to piss him off even more.
