I wonder if ESPN is exclusive to Fox? If not, or that something could be worked out, then ESPN could possibly sell itself to multiple outlets including streaming services if they had the rights and charge for the premium content they have. Even foxtel would have to pay it to prevent subscribers leaving.

It's not. You can get ESPN on fetch.

That wouldn't happen to be the same Fetch that Optus are going to carry on their streaming device that's intended to rival TelstraTV, would it?

Have to admit I am loving all this intrigue doc. The nrls silence can be read various ways. I am guessing some news limited trolls are gonna have mud on their faces in good time

I've had fetch for a month (was free with my new connection) and I have been impressed with how good it is. The boxes are a neat little tool and the content covers most of what I used to watch on Fox outside of the stuff on sport. With Netflix on top of that the only thing missing from what my family used to watch is the sport content.

I watch the Premier League through Bein Sports Arabia, NFL through Game Pass so it's only NRL I'm missing out on.

I think Bein Sports are more realistic than ESPN considering that ESPN are losing rights like the Champions League to Bein and that Bein have been known to aggressively expand into new markets like France.

A production house
A subscription or streaming format that connects to televisions, mobiles & tablets with TV quality images
A partnership with an ISP or multiple ISPs
A bid that puts upward financial pressure on News & Telstra

I'm convinced that Monday night football is gone. I've heard a whisper that it was actually John Grant who insisted on it going if Thursday night is going to be a permanent feature.

I dare say that is because he realises the clubs, let alone the players, would not tolerate games being on 5 days a week as it would effect their turn around times between games let alone their preparation time.

But it?s a lot of money with a big hand still to play. If the NRL gets back control of its draw, moves an Origin to weekends, locks in pre-season and post-season schedules with certainty and still gets less than the AFL, I am comfortable with that as a rugby league fan.

Great article by Mascord and I agree totally with this. I have serious doubts Fox would ever have agreed to losing Monday nights unless they had Thursday in return. League on FTA on 4 days a week is a massive improvement and something Fox wouldn't have allowed. Money is great but exposure is just as important.

Solid article from Mascord. You get the feeling he is literally the only RL journo at present that will provide balance, on this subject and others.

That's not really fair, both Roy Masters and Andrew Webster in the Herald this week have shown they're not infected by the hysterical fear mongering over at the Tele and on Triple M

Bein is also extra on top of a normal sports package. ESPN has greater exposure and more recognition.

What if Hayne becomes a hit and ESPN in the USA wants to show a game per week? Highly unlikely but something that could open doors.

I'm 100% a Hayne Plane supporter, but his "success" or otherwise won't mean the NRL will suddenly become a hot commodity in the USA

and unlike Telstra's Roku, Optus device will likely include a TV Tuner.

News rags seem to enjoy living under the impression that Smith is stupid and or naive, yet they ignore the fact that any strategy and TV deal is first signed off on by the commission, and one Graeme Samuel, who has been arguing with foxtel & Telstra for decades.

ESPN sounds good, However Dave Smith hasn't even spoke to them yet? What is he waiting for.

How do you know .
The ARLC surprised everyone with their announcement of the FTA deal .

They play their cards very close to their chest ,so why would they announce who they are in discussions with .

The media speculation/bullshit is laughable .
Most don't have a clue .

Secret deal...when NRL is in the drivers seat...

then exclude or seek advice from any of his team.

What sort of business does not allow others to even bid.

this is how corrupt govts are run
