It's going to remain 4 matches on F2A. You'd think that would be most likely as the Sunday Double Header has been and still is desirable for 9.

The other alternatives are for the last Saturday game on Fox to be preceded by a pre-news game on 9 or a post-news game on 10 (if an on-sell occurs) - but that's still breaking the Saturday subscription block to some degree.

Again - Foxtel could come out of this with 4 simulcast matches (new games on Thursday & Friday slots) & up to 5 exclusive matches including but not limited to potentially Sunday evening/night exclusive & Saturdays exclusive. Any talk about that not being an attractive sell to subscribers is BS.

Well, now with Monday night football gone, I can't see there being 4 games on Saturday afternoon/night and only 2 on Sunday. I'd imagine that Sunday night is almost a guarantee with a 6:30 or 7pm kick off.

What are the chances of Nine being interested in the Sunday evening match? Having the 4pm game, followed by the News and then Sunday evening? I can't imagine them being too interested as their reality shows are cheaper and deliver massive ratings as opposed to having an expensive show NRL) to deliver massive ratings.

And where on earth do we put a 9th game? 4 Saturday games?

We?re getting mail the NRL has asked Channel Nine to give up its Saturday night game in the next television deal in a desperate attempt by Dave Smith to get Fox Sports back to the negotiating table.

If true its not a good look for Dave Smith.

Well never say never but Sunday nights on 9 means split coverage for Southern States - I can't see that happening on F2A until a network can acquire both NRL & AFL rights and target their programming (like 9 had with Fridays a while back).

I've said before there's a couple of ways it can play out with a 9th game (too lazy to retype it) but basically the locked in slots are Thu Night, Fri Night, Sat Evening, Sat Night, Sun Arvo Early, Sun Arvo Late, Sun Evening -- you'd expect those 7 for pretty much every round. The other 2 matches would be scheduled in some combination of the Sat Arvo Early slot, Sat Arvo Late slot, Sunday Noon slot (for Warriors matches) or a Holiday slot (Anzac Arvo/Fri Arvo/Mon Arvo/Mon Night) -- or one of the other slots would be doubled up (most likely Sat Night).

But yes one of the weekend days will likely have 4 matches on it - if I'm not mistaken the AFL does that too.

What about two Saturday night games? Can offer one FTA via ch9 and then Fox keeps Super Saturday.

Big value for us is that our games don't cannibalise each other because they're not on at the same time. More chance for neutrals to watch if it's the only game on. It will have to happen if we get a few more matches a week, but if we can avoid it, we should.

If and when the NRL grows it will be inevitable. In fact it probably a a good thing for pay tv, doesn't matter to them to have two or three games up against each other, still drives subscriptions of the clubs fans involved. Doesn't work for pay tv as reduces eyeballs on ads but red button options on pay to is a positive for them. Arguably the more games on fox regardless of times the more fans are likely to subscribe.

That's a good point actually. It's more content for them.

Fox are looking like getting just 50% of the NRL fan base exclusive per week (4 games) But if there was an extra 2 games a week, they would have 50% of the fan base. More likely hood of people signing up.

It would be much better for attendances if it was an additional Sunday afternoon game. If the NRL are serious about boosting crowd averages, ditching Monday night football and adding another Sunday afternoon fixture is a good place to start.

I really don't like the idea of giving back Saturday night FTA. And in the AFL/Ch7 deal they talk about the halo effect a lot. So to me Ch9 would also be giving something up.

I hope the NRL hold out, seems to me that reality is starting to sink in at News/Fox/Telstra. Fun n games coming up.

Nine agreed to what they had to to keep the rights from going to tender, Saturday night may have been a low priority for Nine and they may be open to letting it go & bringing their costs down on the deal. I think the deal is structured with a fair degree of flexibility, with it reducing if the NRL grant simulcasting, it could be equally flexible with the Saturday night game. There's no doubt the NRL want 4 games on FTA, but Nine having the Saturday night game is a good way for the NRL to create competition for the STV rights.

The NSW Cup is set to be expanded before the NRL competition, with no new teams to be added until all 16 clubs are financially viable and independently owned.

While the success of this month's historic all-Queensland grand final between the Cowboys and Broncos has sparked calls for the state to be rewarded with a fourth NRL franchise, the financial problems at the Gold Coast Titans and Newcastle Knights have put paid to the introduction of any new clubs in the near future.

The NRL has had to take control of the Titans and Knights and will not consider expanding the competition until they are able to relinquish ownership of those clubs and the other 14 are financially strong.

"I think our clubs are stronger, there is no question about that, and there have been some interventions over the last couple of years to make them even stronger but until you have got 16 sustainable, profitable clubs that are able to re-invest back into their clubs it seems inconceivable that you would add a club and just add to the burden," NRL chief executive Dave Smith said.

"I think there has been a lot of progress been made there but you have got to get that base strong before you can contemplate adding any more NRL teams. But that doesn't mean you don't grow the game because you can grow in so many other areas."

The NRL this year took an Origin to Melbourne, staged the Nines in Auckland and revived the annual All-Stars fixture on the Gold Coast, while the inaugural World Club Series was played in England, and Perth, Darwin, Wellington, Napier, Hamilton, Cairns and Bathurst hosted premiership games.

In addition, officials considered playing the opening match of this year's premiership in London and discussed the idea again recently for next season but Fairfax Media understands such an undertaking is unlikely until the new broadcast deal starts in 2018.

NRL head of strategy Shane Richardson has also been working on a Whole of Game Review, which focuses heavily on creating a genuine second tier for the game.

To do so, Richardson is expected to recommend that new franchises will be introduced in an expanded 14-team NSW Cup from regional and rural areas, as well as Fiji and New Zealand.

Albury, Coffs Harbour and Tamworth are among the areas that have been mentioned as possible locations for future NSW Cup franchises, while a Fiji bid team involving Petero Civoniceva is aiming for inclusion in 2017.

"Some of the work 'Richo' is doing in his blueprint around the second tier and around the regions will I think see a significant shift in terms of the broader footprint," Smith said.

"For example, there could be a couple of teams in the bush, where we want to encourage our young men and young women to stay at home for longer, and regional sides from New Zealand or the Pacific Islands.

"Expansion doesn't just have to be whether we have 17 or 18 NRL teams, I think it can be a more rationalised view of the region and how we make the base of our game and the pathways much stronger.

"We are expanding the base of our audience, we are expanding our participation levels, we have introduced new products like Nines and the World Club Series, we've introduced a wider inclusiveness of the game through touch football and tag, we've seen the women's game be much more embraced and the pathways there through our Jillaroos, so I think we are expanding.

"If you look at the mix of people watching our bigger events, increasingly there are more of the softer fans coming in and staying in, and I think the composition of the fan base is much more aligned to the community. That is true expansion."

We saw how well expansion teams went in the AFL,whilst other AFL teams are losing money hand over foot.

It's like comparing apples to oranges. You have the Gold Coast Suns on the good coast which is a sporting waste land and you have the Giants in a city who already have a team in NRL heart land. The NRL would be expanding into Perth to be a one team city and into SE qld somewhere which is bursting at the seams for a team.

So you can stop speculating on a ninth game, another missed opprtunity for the game to grow.
The NRL will expand when it can afford to.
Heaven forbid we have the same problem that the aFL do at the moment with 2 clubs bleeding their coffers dry.
10 years time we will have an expanded NRL comp why the aFL will be a part time comp in the southern states.

Lol, yes of course we will. In ten years we'll likelY still be a myopic organisation with the game played in a handful of places. Nrl's doubled its revenue and had an opportunity to increase again with an extra game, it can afford to do plenty of things if it had the vision to. Ho hum. The more things change the more they stay the same.
