This is a holding strategy. The nrl can change its mind when it needs to. I like the announcement. Statting new clubs right now makes no sense while existing ones need to be fixed. I am guessing the nrl has an acute awareness of the black holes occurring to the afl in new markets. It might take 2, 5 or 10 years to put in new clubs but at least it will be done carefully and with a risk management approach.

Lol, yes of course we will. In ten years we'll likelY still be a myopic organisation with the game played in a handful of places. Nrl's doubled its revenue and had an opportunity to increase again with an extra game, it can afford to do plenty of things if it had the vision to. Ho hum. The more things change the more they stay the same.
So do you propose that the NRL put a club in Perth whether its viable or not?
Would you like to see the NRL go down the same route like the aFL have with their 2 expansion clubs and throw money down a black hole, jeopardizing the future of other clubs as well?
For the record i would like to see a NRL club in Perth.

It's like comparing apples to oranges. You have the Gold Coast Suns on the good coast which is a sporting waste land and you have the Giants in a city who already have a team in NRL heart land. The NRL would be expanding into Perth to be a one team city and into SE qld somewhere which is bursting at the seams for a team.

I understand that point.however it is important to ensure current struggling NRL teams who have committed fans, are made financially viable first.
I am pro expansion, but not at the expense of any NRL club, unless they are complete basket cases with next to no fans.

Bear in mind Smith has stated expressions of interest have been shown to buy into the Titans and Knights. So things may well move quicker than we think,on teh expansion front.

So you can stop speculating on a ninth game, another missed opprtunity for the game to grow.

Smith Did say in the next decade there will be 18 teams.

My guess is this deal will be used to get the existing clubs right financially and to get all the ground work done for expansion and not rush the process.

Just because the commission is not running on our timeline does not mean they are not doing it the right way, they have a lot more information about the clubs and there position than we do.

Your just going to have to hold on for another 5 years, not so bad mate.;-)

On the down side for everyone else is we have to put up with your tantrums/whinging for another 5 years. OH NOES...:lol:

No I'd like to see a plan for Perth or anywhere else the NRL decides it wants a club eventually. At the moment their is zero plan for expansion, I'm not talking about starting a club tomorrow I'm talking about exposure, media, public awareness, grass root growth, schools programs expansion, NRL games being consistently played, the odd international. You know the things other codes do to build their presence before starting up a new club in a new region. the work should have started years ago, instead it is going backwards in perth and other potential growth regions. We should be at a point where TV is screaming out for more games of NRL in new areas. Don't need an announcement of a new team now, be nice to see what the plan for growth is.

Not quite he said there may be 18 teams.
TBH not really once the final decision is made that will be it for me, back to the local RL and whatever sport I can get into that I can watch live and follow a club in. Shame to see the game lose committed fans but my choice as I chose to live in a beautiful city but with no NRL team (though when I chose Perth they did have one, fcking SL!)

Exactly, I really don't see it being very different than what he's said previously. The anxiety level of some people here is quite bizarre.

1) They're incorporating country teams & international sides into the second tier structure - that's expansion in itself

2) They've allowed for a 9th game re-negotiation in the F2A deal - that shows that they've considered the possibility for 2 extra teams in the lifetime of the next deal plus that by including in the F2A agreement they want to create competition for that slot against subscription providers

3) They've commissioned reports into expansion teams in Perth & Brisbane - they've paid a market consultancy firm to do this which means they're serious about investment - this is just one part of the overall game review

4) There's no reason why the propped up clubs can't be sorted out in the near future - as others have said there's already buyers circling. Even when the clubs get increased funding they're still going to cry to poor, there's never going to be a "perfect" time so like the AFL expansion is going to happen at a time when at least 1 club has still got issues

5) The announcement of expansion isn't likely to happen until after the next subscription TV deal is sorted as the two are inextricably linked - the NRL are in a different position to the AFL when they expanded. The NRL have to play hardball with Fox to get a decent market value. They're not going to make any grand announcement until they know what their future options are

I thought that by downplaying the chances of expansion they've got a bigger bargaining power with fox for there coveted 9th tv spot. They may be able to get fox to fund expansion

Bingo. But, from Smiths words, it's like he's guaranteed the clubs that no new teams would be created until they're set. If expansion happens and the clubs are struggling, it's like he's gone back on what he said to the clubs.

I'd be inclined to think that expansion won't be happening for a little while.

Not quite ,the NRL clubs have to still meet performance indicators, and being financially underpinned is part of that.
Rest assured if a club is going downhill fast with no light on the horizon, expansion will be fast forwarded.
Smith hasn't guaranteed anything,.what he has stated he wants to assist clubs all clubs to get their acts together.
The clubs will be getting a salary cap covered ,plus additional funding(subject to negotiations )to cover the monetary losses some clubs now make. The clubs want more extra than the NRL is currently aiming to grant.
If buyers are found for Newcastle and Titans and the Tigers get their crap together, that gets rid of a major headache for smith and Co.

We are reading far too much into Newspaper reports. The landscape can change at any point of time.Of course it's not all rosy ATM,but it "aint the end of the NRL world."

It seems we can afford to send 2 teams to play in London but we can't afford to put another team in QLD which still has only 3 for the whole state.
Maybe I should remind people that Sydney has 9 teams.

Yeah and it costs the same amount to send 3 teams to London for one off games as it does to fund, run and administer and extra team in the comp

So we don't send 3 teams to next years world club challenge and we can afford a new team in Brisbane! Problem solved! Why didn't the dummies at the nrl figure that out?

It doesn't cost the NRL clubs a penny to go and play in the WCC in the UK the Super League clubs pick up the tab.

The NRL pays flights & accommodation.
And that is then payed back by the Super League clubs.
I often wonder if Rugby League would be in a better position world wide if Super League clubs had the same amount of money as NRL clubs.
Super League clubs appear to have more vision than NRL clubs that's for sure.
