Comparing tv ratings between GWS to NRL expansion to Perth is laughable. We are talking about a new frontier with the perfect time zone seperation, against AFL expansion into a city which already has a team within city limits, as large as Greater Sydney is.

The Giants surely havent recruited many fans from non AFL followers. If you were interested in the game, and lived in Western Sydney, would you not already follow a team, Swans or otherwise. They may well have converted existing clubs fans as the local team, but it will take generations for GWS to have a "home grown" supporter base, hardly relevant in TV rights negotiations. A Perth NRL team would also "hijack" existing clubs fans in that city, but the Pirates can provide access to a game which is currently out of reach of the west coast population, thus enticing new fans to the game.

Comparison to Brisbane 2 is more relevant, yet still apples and oranges.

NRL SEQ - Heartland, juniors, underrepresented.
AFL Sydney/GWS - Outpost, money pit, Swans support possibly jeopardised.

Good point, but obviously the Anzac Day ratings will be inflated in comparison to a "normal' Saturday afternoon game.

Yes, I agree with the point regarding Ch9's game next Saturday being on ANZAC day. However, this is the first time they have televised a regular season Saturday arvo match since 1997, and it will give some sort of indication of the potential there is in that timeslot given this will be a live broadcast unlike the delayed broadcasts of the past.

Saturday arvo 3pm has always been a difficult timeslot to attract crowds (due to kids sport and people working) and tv ratings. On the rare occasion it has got a good crowd (like the 20k that turned up at Newcastle a couple of weeks ago), but in Sydney anything over 10k is a success. Like with the live Sunday FTA game, I would move the kickoff on Saturday arvo back an hour or so from 3pm to 4:10-15pm kickoff - it will get more people to the game, as well as higher ratings compared to whatever Ch9 normally shows on Saturdays during 4-6pm during the league season. So, the Saturday schedule would be as follows:

4pm (live on Ch9, pre-game show at 3:30pm)
6pm (live on Fox)
8pm (live on Fox)

The 5:30/7:30pm Fox matches would have to be moved back half an hour, which is no big deal IMO. They still get two matches in primetime, and Ch9 gets a live game leading into Nine News. And if expansion does occur and the new timeslot for the 9th game was Sunday evening, Fox would get that game in exchange for the Sat 4pm game.

Saturday 3pm crowds have been solid with some excellent showings since it returned. It has performed no worse than any other slot. Also i don't see the need for every slot to comply with the needs of the family with kids a sport, saturday 3pm is the slot were you want to draw in the 18+ men demographic who otherwise are at the TAB or drinking in the backyard. This is the demographic that forms the backbone of support in most sports and the NRL does not really do enough to draw them to the grounds.

I would like to see on a saturday
-3pm FOX
-5.30pm FOX
-7.30pm FOX
-7.30pm FTA (& simulcast on fox multiview)

The key will be getting a Perth side into the comp at which point along with the 9th game you get way more flexibility for scheduling.

Last post on this and will stop derailing the thread.

It as a 9 year deal to be precise...

And apparently the NBA didn't even negotiate with other broadcasters beyond the existing ones?

Not sure that's a sign of a party squeezing every last dollar they can...

Yeah ESPN and ABC and TNT are horrible choice for a sport to broadcast from. :sarcasm:

In the states these networks have bent over backwards to look after the NBA (think the opposite of CH9 and the NRL) and short of getting some games on NBC they have huge saturation across the TV market.

Imagine if the NRL had a split between CH9 & CH7 then the NRL seriously be considering an offer from SBS and only secondary digital channels.

There wasn't much of an alternative of broadcast partners without being always 2nd fiddle to the NFL.

To be fair in the discussion it should be noted that 190,000 people were watching it on Fox Sports.

Lol
FUMBLEDERP logic .
Yes all those 190 k were in Syd .

On the rare occasions when STV give a single city number it usually is about 1/3 of the FTA numbers .
So being generous say we add 18 k to the 47 k

All up in Syd for the big battle of the derps. 65 k

Tsunami alert
EXTREME.

And how many of them were from Sydney, Mr AFL sycophant? Not many. That 190k is a national figure, not just 5-metros.
FTA is where it's at, as that is where the majority of advertising $'s is made due to the larger potential audience vs ppl who have Foxtel.

158k watched Carlton vs Essendon on Fox, yet only 15k watched it in Brisbane on FTA. That's right, 15k. Are you going to tell me that most of the Brisbane folk were watching that game on Foxtel?

here are the figures for Sydney from last year that will upset AFL Fan http://www.news.com.au/sport/nrl/fa...g-the-favourites/story-fndv34of-1226857933645

GWS enjoyed a historic win over Sydney Swans but only 63,000 people in Sydney watched it, just 1.3 per cent of the metropolitan area?s 4.6 million population.

The GWS-Swans game attracted 20,000 viewers on Fox Sports and another 43,000 on 7Mate

That's right.

Even before Fox started to simulcast all games in 2012, the Swans only cracked 100k in Sydney for finals games and most of the time were struggling to get much over 50k for regular season games that were on Ch7/10 (yes, even in primetime. Ch7/10 did far more for AFL in Sydney than Ch9 did for the Storm in Melbourne). Those FTA ratings are consistent with what they were in Sydney pre-2012.

What makes these sycophants all of a sudden think that the audience in Sydney has suddenly increased 100-200% since then, with most of them watching on Fox rather than FTA? Doesn't make sense at all.

Hows the AFL ratings in Sydney compared to the NRLs in Melbourne? I suspect Storm are drawing better on pay tv but worse on FTA due to Ch9's poor covg and burying on digital?

Cant compare AFL in Brisbane to NRL in Perth yet until we get a club and get the game established stronger here.

Adeilade and Tassie is obviously a no brainer to AFL for same reason as Perth.

How about NT and ACT, how do the figures fair in Darwin and Canberra?

Regional NSW saves the NRL's bacon alot I reckon, Sydney audiences arent huge for its population.

Plus the fact that it is well known that the large STV take up in Syd was RL driven .

But apparently they all now have switched to Derpball .

Ratings for yesterday's all-Sydney AFL clash on 7Mate (during 4:30-7:30pm) were 47k in Sydney, which is very poor considering the twilight game went into primetime

https://twitter.com/MediaweekAUS/status/589577418412838912

So, given the Swans get similar ratings for most matches, it's fair to say that it really is only either the diehard AFL fans or Victorian expats who make up the tv audience figures in Sydney. Same goes with the Brisbane ratings.

Will be interesting to see what ratings the Roosters/Dragons clash gets on Saturday. If it rates well, expansion does occur in 2018 and that extra game goes to Ch9 (assuming they win the FTA rights), they may be tempted to have a Saturday 4pm game leading into Nine News. There's no chance they will get an exclusive Saturday night 7:30-8pm match as the Saturday night and Monday night games are Fox Sports bread and butter (in terms of ratings). Only way Ch9 will televise Saturday night footy is if the match is simulcasted on Fox Sports (like in the AFL), which Ch9 won't agree to as simulcasting was the very reason why they didn't bid in the last AFL tv rights negotiations.

It is for reasons just like this that you have to make sure that there are other bidders involved, otherwise we will get short changed once again.

When all is said and done and both the NRL and AFL have their respective rights sorted, only then will we know who the winner/s and/or loser/s are. Somehow I have a feeling that we will once again be second best to the AFL.

Did we? I thought for Australian digital, fta and pay TV afl got $130mill more than nrl last deals?
on digital ours included Telstra sponsorship where as afl get $10mill a year from Toyota on top of their digital deal.
Afl $1.253bill (+$50mill sponsorship)
NRL $1.123bill.

The 2 deals are so difficult to compare (different no. of games, different no. of ads per game, F&L, non-traditional media, naming rights), this pissing contest has no definite answer.

And this absolutely is a pointless pissing contest....

Not really, what matters is how much the game Ended up with in its pocket and we still got $180mill less from the Australia deal than afl. Everyone was happy we broke $1bill and hasn't questioned why Telstra paid $70mill less to nrl, why that included main naming rights worth $10mill a year and why ch9 and fox paid less for nrl than afl.
