Billionaire owner of the Newcastle Jets, Nathan Tinkler, has decided to return the licence for the A-League franchise immediately to Football Federation Australia.
In a media release from the Hunter Sports Group, CEO Troy Palmer said it was a difficult decision but one forced on HSG by a breakdown in confidence with the FFA.
“As a keen Jets and football fan this has been a tough decision and I am aware the impact this will have on members, players, coaches, fans and the entire football community,” Palmer said.

“I am particularly saddened for members and supporters who have embraced our community model, which has been accepted in so many areas as a successful and unique way to engage the entire community and build the A-League brand.
“It is also frustrating to have invested so much time, energy and money to save the Jets for the community at short notice and then continually hit road blocks at the FFA.
“It should never be forgotten that when we stepped in to save the club it was insolvent, there were only 500 members, diminishing crowds, minimal community engagement, no merchandise programme and negligible corporate support.
“During the 2011/12 season we believe we turned this around to be seen as leaders in all these areas.
“Unfortunately, having lost confidence in the FFA management and its ability to find a resolution, it is clear we have no other option.
“It is about removing ourselves from an administration in which we have an untenable relationship.”

The jets will be back in one incarnation or another next season. I think this is just Tinkler's way of showing the other clubs how it's do in relation to leaving the FFA behind.

i feel for their good fans (all 2 of them)... the rest can eat shit. i couldn't care less about the Jets disappearing... and i now have to look forward to everyone going "WAAAHHH Tinkler is going to pull the plug on the Knights next", etc. all the doomsayers and haters will be frothing at the vag.

Billionaire games.
Tinkler didn't appreciate being taken for a fool by Lowey and is dropping the whole thing in Lowey's lap in retaliation.
I think it will be sorted out eventually.

lol Well this is no surprise really. The FFA makes the ARL look like a competent, forward thinking administration and Tinks would have sunk as much cash as he was going to into what is in all reality a 2nd tier sport in Australia.

Sucks for soccer fans in the Hunter but as I am not one of them, I really couldnt give a toss

The FFA is a basket case, there's no transparency at all and the A league is turning into abit of a joke for a supposedly professional competition. The fact that 3 teams have already folded (would've been 4 if Tinkler hadn't stepped in initially) since 2007 shows the current model isn't working but the top brass just want to bury their heads in the sand

If he did the same to the Knights one day, what is in the contract to happen to the club, go back to the members or ???

This. The jets were an embarrassment to Newcastle and I for one am glad to see them gone. Largely because this spells the end of those scum known as the squadron

Agreed. I have a mate that loves to sit in the squadron section of the eastern grandstand and I've joined him a couple of times. They are nothing more than soccer hooligans using strength in numbers to try and intimidate others. It wasn't that long ago, that they went to the Broadmeadow train station so they could wait for the Sydney FC supporters. There motives were to be involved in a brawl. It's pathetic really..

More a reflection on the FFA than anything. Tinkler's not the kind of guy to suffer fools and liars.

Poor form dancing on the grave of people who are hurting right now.

Hope this all works out, we need a strong soccer club in Newcastle.

What wankers. I feel for Newy, if Wellington lost the Pheonix it would be a big blow. But the Yellow Fever are always in good spirits and dont cause any troubles like that mob.

I feel we have every right to dance on their grave since its jets fans who have laid the boot into the knights at every opportunity.

Looks like we get to have the last laugh after all :)
