How does taking a quarter of a million less to sell the rights to a channel on the verge of bankruptcy help going forward?

I don't think Fox is the perfect solution by any means, but there are two points here. Channel Seven could still choose to show the ODIs under anti-siphoning, and they have chosen not to. The other networks either did not even bid for the ODIs, or bid for them as an afterthought. There are so many more factors than just "ffs CA" involved in this

Why did it have to be 6 years? Tell channel 10 the figure is fine for 5 years.

CA make the rights available they can demand FTA shows the games

Perhaps if the folks on social media watched the ODI matches in the first place, they'd have rated well enough for the networks to bid good coin for them...

And I'm not including yourself in that assessment, but I find it funny that the ratings have been so low that the networks don't even care if they broadcast the games or not, yet when they aren't it seems like 97% of the country are up in arms.

Didn't they pull 1m viewers to every game? Crowds were poor but rating were strong

They are all good points

I agree if the need was there the networks would show them

It’s change I guess

We’ve had free to air coverage since the 70’s

Cricket will go the way of rugby union if its not careful. The big wank is nice and shiny now but the standard is poor and the novelty will soon go. Who can tell us off the top of their head who won last year or who took the most wickets? The big wank is just like pulp fiction.

Cricket Australia should have made it part of the deal that all international games were shown on fta, but they're too busy chasing coin and trying to keep up/suck up to India.

I feel for the kids whose families can't afford pay as they won't grow up with cricket, but more than them I feel for the old blokes/ducks whove loved cricket their whole lives but can't see it because its on pay

I’m sorry - whilst I agree with the sentiment that CA should do what’s best for the game, I think that suggesting they should be forced to accept a quarter of a billion dollars less is quite naive.

Best post in the thread, couldn't agree more AG.

If you aren't on FTA you are f**ked IMO, Aye League, yawnion and the V 8's are all mostly on Pay TV and they are struggling big time.

I don’t disagree with this but how much of this was due to the product of one dayers being devalued by cricket Australia ?

I mean they’ve treated the one day format like a red headed step child since the big bash has come along

Why would the public care if they don’t ?

Add to that the games don’t mean anything anymore eg no benson and hedges style triangular series just three meaningless games in November

I think Ch7 have stuffed it

WC next year, t20 WC at home the year after
those rights had already been sold to 9

https://thenewdaily.com.au/sport/cricket/2018/04/13/channel-nine-loses-cricket/
“Cricket will continue to be a part of Nine’s schedule into the future with current deals in place covering the next Ashes series from England in 2019, the ODI World Cup in the UK in the same year and in 2020 the T20 World Cups to be held in Australia.”

I am sure ch10 would of bid just for ODI's.. CA have failed here

Again, they did - but it wasn’t a little bit less money. It was a quarter of a billion dollars.

I want it to be on fta too, but perspective is needed.

I mean selling the FTA ODI's seperate on top of the deal currently.

For whatever Ch7 doesn't want to show them... So then go to someone else. It is the same stupidity that ECB did in England.

How much is a program with 1m viewers worth to FTA stations?

Yeah that’s the question.

9 was taking a bath on it - their advisors recommended they drop the cricket, which is why they gunned so hard at the tennis.

We’re all cricket fans here so I think our perspective is a bit askew. Looking it objectively I think the reality is that 50 over cricket is the least watched, and this is just the reality of the situation.

Tests and the bulk of the BBL are still on FTA which is better than they have it in any of the 11 other test playing countries, and enough that the game is still going to have substantial exposure to the next generation of cricketers. We’ve had it so good for so long, there was obviously going to be outrage.
