listen to this bleating from weirdler about the all stars audience being down
hang on a minute it's either "too early to say" or it's "a clear warning" it can't be both at the same time!!
Clearly, it is too early to say the decline is based solely on the player scandals or that it will continue when the premiership kicks off next month.

But it is a clear warning to ARLC chairman Peter Beattie that it’s time to stop talking and do something about the carnage.

Typical Weidler crap, string a whole lot of words together that contradict one another and call it journalism

Is it possible that people also have access to streaming trials this year and chose to watch the NRL trial over the all stars? I know i didn't see the game as i was at St Marys but if it was somewhere else i couldn't get to i would have streamed it and still not watched the all stars?

The merkins like to panic at any chance they get!! It keeps them in jobs.........

Weidler’s a dick but the statement that you quoted is fine.

The “clear warning” is the lower attendance. They need to fix that.

What’s “too early to say” is whether the shit player behaviour is contributing to that lower attendance.

The problem with crowds is that they will come when winning and not when losing.

The biggest issue with the game in terms of attendance is the teams that are at the top consistently are not big crowd drawers. Brisbane are an exception but other than that the Cowboys, Storm and Roosters generally draw terrible crowd numbers in comparison to their success.

The Cowboys probably do the best but their stadium still only holds about 25k, so their average based on the amount of success they have is still pretty low, plus when they come to Sydney they don't bring fans.

The Storm as the most successful and their averages are complete shit in comparison to their success. Same as Cowboys, they have no fans outside of Melbourne.

I don't even need to discuss the Roosters........they have f**k all fans.

Manly are the same as the Roosters when they are successful, fans just don't travel.

In contrast, if teams like us, Tigers and Bulldogs had the type of success of the above 3 teams then the averages would be through the roof and no-one would be complaining about attendance, ratings etc.

Then we have situations where Tigers and Dragons where they have multiple "home" stadiums and that just shits fans who live nowhere near one of the stadiums so they are divided.

And finally Souths home stadium is so far away from where they are from that they lose a lot of potential fans that could travel.

We are also terrible when it comes to weather, any rain or too cold and people just don't attend.

I'm sure i've missed plenty too.......

Big Bash semi-final was on too. That would no doubt have taken some viewers away from the exhibition match.

Plus, the fact is it's an exhibition match. I know I wouldn't have put the night aside to watch it like I would an Eels game.

So there are a few factors that could account for it. Personally I streamed the trial and watched the Sixers choke, just flicked over the All Stars a few times.

Exactly what I did as well Baz, I barely watched the All Star game at all.

Weedler cherry picking one game and telling us all the sky is falling. f**king Turnip.

Put the trials aside - Does anyone think its remotely possible that the continued shit behaviour of NRL players has contributed to the NRL being less popular?

Its not the sole reason but it has to be a factor. I reckon the average player these days is far less interesting and worthy of support.

Weidler probably has a point, but he picked the wrong game to make it.

I'm not saying it has or it hasn't. It probably has, but it's hard for me to say because I've drifted away from the game somewhat as I've gotten older anyway.

Just pointing out that The Weed has, IMO, put two and two together and somehow come up with 11

I am pretty sure official figures last year for both attendance and viewers were up on the previous year.

As for behaviour it has to affect some people but also people like to blow hot air, right? "I'm never drinking again" is probably the most uttered line in the world but people always go back again when their headache goes away.

I'd say the general negativity around the world these days and the way things are reported on help as well. There are only negative sport stories, barely positive. The mindset of people is negative, anything to be outraged over is what people are after.

Parents are happy to not let their kid watch an NRL player for being a dickhead (leaving out domestic violence and rape, they are a different category than pissing on a street corner) but will happily let their kid listen to a rapper talk about taking drugs and f**king everything that moves and has been arrested plenty of times cause the parent likes that artist.

I will also go back to team success, if the team you support is a little shit and players in general are acting up then it is easier to give less of a shit but if your team then starts winning you may be more likely to not give a shit about general player behaviour and watch your team win......

Humans are weird.......oh and shit, they are also shit!

I didn't think his point was that ridiculous and he was careful not to make the actual linkage. Probably a little negative but still less stupid than 95% of the posts on here. Particularly mine.

TBH I think all sports have probably suffered a drop in viewers
There was a time when I could watch a five day test match and love it ( time permitting). Now, I struggle to watch a 20/20 game. Sport in all its forms has now become an overload for the average punter, IMO.

A lot of sports followers are put off by the negativity of social media, not long ago we would eagerly read the morning paper, Rugby League Week for our news. Now we open up our iPad or phone and we see sensational headlines, opinions from negative bloggers and in some ways , enthusiasm is eroded. The tv news is now in the same space as ambulance chasers and the like as it reports in such sensationalist terms.

Not saying that's all there is to it, but posting continual negative sh*t as we seefrom the other site, dulls the appetite. Our cause wasn't helped by 2018, which was a train wreck, and as one of most heavily supported teams, it affects everything in terms of attendance and viewers.

Agree his point wasnt totally ridiculous ... though it is still a bit of a shit stir ... its preseason and an exhibition game - cant put too much on it

Agree with what Korny said ... well supported teams have struggled a bit of late ... if the top 4 were Eels, Dogs, Dragons, Bunnies then shit would be going off
