I actually reckon it’s a pretty good punishment and deterrent. Credibility and respect of male friends and peers are often key motivators for change with these types of behaviours. I think a similar blanket sanction across the NRL for any DV related conviction might just be the catalyst for some of these dickheads to pull their head in.

I’m fine with this. As long as they are on full pay, I can’t see how they can mount a legal challenge. That’s no different to any employee being suspended from work on full pay whilst investigations take place. Happens plenty in the Police force, child related employment etc. they can’t then sue their employee for making them not come to work.

Don’t forget there needs to be sufficient evidence for police to press charges. It’s not full proof and sure, there will always be false accusations, but law enforcement have deemed there to be sufficient evidence to gain a conviction.

Realistically the NRL is between a rock and a hard place here. On the one hand, we have the assumption of innocence until guilt is proven but on the other, how can you have a guy charged with a serious offence representing your brand every week? They have to be seen to be taking a stand IMO.

But based on similar discussions in the NRL forum and on social media this is going to make a lot of people very upset

Agreed and I think a lot of that boils down to merkins refusing to believe that their heroes can be scumbags and they can do no wrong. Pretty straight forward though, don’t put yourself in a position to become a target. Yes, that means deleting your tinder account.

Agree. Brent Stewart went through a meat grinder only to be found NG. Semi was not suspended, however lost his AU jumper over it and copped it deluxe from merkins like Erin Molan.

Suspended on full pay should be the norm IMHO for any charge that may lead to a custodial sentence.
