....and then the libs doubled it in 4 years.

https://thenewdaily.com.au/money/finance-news/2017/03/26/coalition-debt-exceeds-labor/
Cost per mb will be cost prohibitive for users under a 5g network or whatever comes after that. The joint standing committee on the NBN estimate that only 10-15% will have mobile internet only when the NBN roll out is complete.

Libs doubled it?
Osbestos pipes, crushed conduits, driveways where cables required excavating. Poor weather
Thing labor hadn't considered.

No it's ^^^^ more about the myth that "The Liberal Party save your money and Labor spend your money."

Over it. Merkins wank over Howard's surplus got us out of the GFC. Yes it did, but let's be real that he ended up with a Gladys surplus because he sold assets.

Do you honestly think the kevin/julia nbn would not have ended up costing a f**kload more than the plan

And yeah the libs thing is no different

Anything of this scale will always blow out

That's not what I was talking about.

Abbott took a political position not because it was the better way to do it, but because he thought it would give him the edge with the punters to be able to offer a cheaper version of the NBN.

Yes cost blow outs are always going to happen. Just look at the big scale works happening in NSW right now. The light rail has blown out $1B and so has the Westconnex and something else that Luke Foley was whinging about. <Does he ever stop whining that bloke ?>

The NBN problem is that they were instructed to build it the Aboott way and then Turnbull had to throw more cash at it to try and make it work. He has now taken over the HFC Foxtel cables, but I think there are still a bog load of merkins who will be stuck with Abbott's brain explosion - fibre to the node.

Abbott's plan was short term politics. He did not care about the actual NBN, He just wanted to have an alternative view to Gillard/Rudd. It's a bit like promising a new freeway to relieve congestion and costing it on 2 lanes each way - knowing that won't work and will need to be upgraded down the track.

This should have been a bi-partisan infrastructure project. Money is cheap and they should have just plugged fibre into every home. Instead (like everything else) the parties take a opposite view of everything just to rattle the political cage.

Cant say i have paid alot of attention ... what is the diff between fibre to the node and HFC (hybrid fibre coax) ... isnt hfc just a version of fibre to a node which then goes coax the last bit?

I'll put it in footy terms. It's like Gutho slicing through five defenders then passes it to Will Smith in attempting to score a team try.

I understand putting a fibre optic cable all the way into a house is great ... but imo it is ridiculous to guarantee you can do that for every house in the country (or 95% or whatever is reasonable excluding remote areas)

I have fibre to the house and it is freaking awesome.
Although after having to go for years with a Max d/l speed of 300kbps I think I deserve it

I bet once they said the same thing about putting a telephone line in every house. They did it though notwithstanding the massive infrastructure task and cost.

Same thing with town water and sewer.

Is high speed internet is the new water sewerage and telephone ? I say yes.

We won’t have anything better than HFC at home, but my building in the city now has fibre to the premises. TPG guy came in last week and offered me 1gbps for $799/m. :open_mouth:

Im happy with 40 up and down for the time being.

Really ? My wife teleconferences in the study at all hours for the shit she does. My son has uni sessions by webinar. My daughter’s schoolwork is all in the cloud via her school portal. My business is all cloud based over multiple software webmail platforms and we are moving files up and down literally every 10mins. We have given up on the servers with raid arrays or whatever, just cloud now.

Dont misread the NBN as just a conduit for netflix.

All of that can be done with moderate speeds .... you are kidding if you believe its a necessity .... and im sure everything would have eventually happened via non govt if it was really a necessity
