Anyone watching or going to Bathurst this weekend? I've watched the race since 1971 (I missed it two years ago), I still find it a great day in front of the TV with friends and the obligatory BBQ even though it lost its original purpose years ago. It's not for everyone but for me it's the Melbourne Cup of motor racing. A ton of memorable moments over the years.

Haven’t watched it for over 20 years. Is Ford v Holden still a thing or is it all about Kia v Hyundai now?

I have three sporting interests. NRL, cricket and motor racing. All three have gone through massive changes over the years, some good, some not so great. Since I brought the subject of motor racing up, I'll keep it to that. Like any sport, the Bathurst race is an icon on the car racing calendar though I have lost interest over the last X amount of years because it doesn't represent its original purpose. Having said that, the track is the best in the country and the racing is hard and fast.

I am neither a motor racing fan nor a horse racing fan, but I always watch Bathurst and the Melbourne Cup. There's just something special about those two events.

So, why the loss in interest? You said you enjoyed motor racing once, why the zero interest now?

Can't speak for Hindy, but I also lost complete interest. A number of reasons I guess. 1) I worked out that I like sports that involve a ball, and don't really others so much. 2) I got ejected from the mountain 3 times in 1988, thanks to my dickhead mates, 3) I bought a Mazda. 4) the passing of Peter Brock. If I was at someone's house and they wanted to watch it for few hours that wouldn't bother me, but I just couldn't care less who wins.

I understand all this apart from the fact you bought a Mazda.

I had more than a passing interest in motor racing growing up. My neigbour was quite famous (among enthusiasts anyway). He would regularly win his class in races and IIRC won bathurst in the 60’s a few times, once in a mini cooper.

When I was 17 i bought a shit box and was flabbergasted when he rattled off the Bathurst racing pedigree of my 1965 Cortina.

When I was in my teens he drove rally cars for the Holden Dealer Team and famously drove in the London to Sydney rally.

Edit: No he drove a citroen to Sydney and drove a Holden in the 1979 Round Australia Rally.

I remember going to the Opera House for the finish on one race anyway.

I got to meet Colin Bond, Ross Dunkerton and that Scottish guy Andrew Cowan. Probably some others but cant remember.
