Benetton apologises over 'death row' ads

Benetton has been forced to apologise over its hugely controversial "death row" adverts and make a substantial charitable donation after the US government accused the Italian fashion company of misleading officials to gain access to inmates.

The state of Missouri filed a lawsuit last year against Benetton over the campaign, which featured prison inmates on death row in the US.

The lawsuit alleged that Benetton made false claims to state officials in gaining access to the prison and misrepresented the purpose of the interview.

Benetton Not Feeling the Love for Its ‘Unhate’ Kissing Campaign

Pope ad is quickly pulled

An image of the Pope smooching an Egyptian Imam—who wouldn't like that? It's just one example of controversial kissin' couples (mainly world leaders in conflict, like Barack Obama and Hu Jintao, and Nicolas Sarkozy and Angela Merkel) from Benetton's new pro-peace "Unhate" campaign from 72andsunny in Amsterdam. The Vatican protested and got that particular ad pulled—they'd probably prefer an image of His Holiness necking with Iman. It's difficult to take the whole manufactured "controversy" seriously. This is Benetton, which has a track record of making shocking ads to generate buzz. It's worked before, with previous ads showing a priest and nun kissing and AIDS patients.

Judging from the outcry, "Unhate" is working, too. Alessandro Benetton explains that the campaign is designed "to give widespread visibility to an ideal notion of tolerance and invite the citizens of every country to reflect on how hatred arises particularly from fear of 'the other’ and of what is unfamiliar to us." That's an awfully high-minded sentiment from a man who makes Day-Glo hipster slacks for a living. Still, I suppose the brand deserves some credit for making folks think or feel anything outside their comfort zones. I'd like to believe it would spark serious reflection and debate about life-and-death issues on the world stage. Alas, like the ads themselves, I fear the reactions—pro and con—just blend into the background noise, giving nothing more than lip service to outrage on the one hand, and pleas for tolerance and understanding on the other. More ads after the jump.

Wow advertising campaign designed to evoke brand awareness by invigorating debate in controversial issues works, again.

You’d think they would learn: their 2020 campaign.

I agree that it doesn't hurt them and wasn't the one who suggested it does.

I'm not their target market anyway. I am not stupid enough to let a dodgy clothes company influence my opinion on issues that are well beyond their station. The legal case relating to them fasifying their reasons for gaining access to prison inmates points to a pretty shitty company that will stop at nothing to peddle their bullshit.

As you said though, they don't care about that. They know there are plenty of people that will take them seriously.

A “stunt” is what a f**k ton of major brands do all the time.

Nickelodeon aligned their brand to LGBTQ. The spongebob gay claim is the media filling in the blanks.

You continue to (wilfully IMO) miss the point entirely and push out false equivalents.

Painting a rainbow on an Absolut bottle is just marketing. Retconning a children's cartoon character against the specific statements of its recently dead creator and suddenly making it something it has no need to be... That's taking pics at BLM to boost your profile.

Nope, you're missing the point. The below instagram post did the same as Absolut and Listerine. Where does the original post say he is gay. It's News Ltd et al who have gone off on a tangent.

Nickelodeon announces SpongeBob SquarePants is gay
SpongeBob SquarePants has just come out to the whole wide world. Here’s what his creators had to say.

You won't find many gay characters in Aussie dramas these days. Why are commercial networks so wary? David Sale, who created the iconic show Number 96, says TV is much less br...

Nickelodeon has just announced that the iconic children’s character SpongeBob SquarePants is gay, in celebration of June’s Pride Month.

The announcement was made last night in a Twitter post, grouping SpongeBob with other well-known LGBTQI characters in the company’s movies and TV shows.

The studio writes, “Celebrating #Pride with the LGBTQ+ community and their allies this month and every month.”

Oh look, they aligned themselves to #BLM too.

Lmao it literally says they announced he's gay.

I'll grant you there isn't a quote, so I'll add the caveat just for your backpedalling, obfuscating ass... If they have retconned his character as gay, against the specific comments to the contrary by his creator, then its nothing more than a cynical PR move and very different to just putting a rainbow shirt on him

They are f**ken children’s channel!
Firstly 90% of their viewership ain’t going to give a f**k about any messages they are trying to send across, secondly 100% of their viewers just want to know where their f**ken cartoons are!
There’s an age group where you can talk to kids about this shit. Nickelodeon’s demographic ain’t it.

Like all cartoons, it’s aimed at the demographic that will move the most merch units. Stoners are just attracted to colourful things but have neither the cognitive ability nor wherewithal to buy stuff

Children would be watching Nickelodeon up to 10 years old. Maybe even older. Are you telling me a child 5-10 years old doesn’t need to know about same-sex couples and the LGBTI+ community? I think they can understand it better than you think.

I want more gay characters in boomer shows.

Like, reboot Blue Heelers, have a season or two for the boomers 8:30 every Wednesday and then bam!

Reveal every character as gay over the course of a season. Every single one.

Normal life is already being displayed in Children's television.

The cartoon "Arthur" has one episode called Mt Ratburn and The Special Someone and features a SSM.

Good Luck Charlie (Disney) have a same sex couple.

Same with Adventure Time (my favourite)

Star Wars Resistance

After much speculation, the show's producers confirmed just this month that the two main male characters are in fact in a happy relationship! "They’re absolutely a gay couple and we’re proud of that,” Executive Producer Brandon Auman said.

No I want to troll boomers.

It's no fun if they know from day one they're gay. I want Karen and Betty to sit down every Wednesday with Keith and Colin and watch their horrid police procedural, safe from the blight of political correctness, and then every single Wednesday for a whole season have another character revealed as gay.

Oh right, like Alf Stewart goes to the Madi Gras Sleaze Ball dressed as the cowboy from the Village People ?
