It's an emotional topic because people know people who have died from cancer due to smoking.

It also seems somewhat weird to infer that people dying is OK. However, her point about smokers dying early and therefore being a less of a burden on the health system still remains.

Sometimes people get too easily outraged.

Conservatives like Devine don't like public health. In fact they think that we should all pay our way for whatever we chose to do in life. In a pure sense, they do not believe in welfare, public health or education and that those who are unable to cope, wither on the vine.

So of course it makes economic sense to her that people die early. Do you feel that distinct lack of empathy to certain parts of the community ? That's why people objected to about Abbott and are marching in the streets about with Trump. They don't give a flying f**k about those people who are in their view are simply in the way of their objectives.

Most people however will recognize that that we have nothing without community and the social cost of losing people before their time has a value that cannot be quantified on balance sheet.

What is the magic age we should be aiming for? Is it the current life expectancy? Perhaps a little bit more? Or should we be reducing it and aspiring to the current life expectancy of many of our minority populations (eg. The indigenous community)?

When you live in a modern social democracy "society" looks after each other. It does not mean that I must feed the needy to prove that I am true to my beliefs. Whilst we believe in prosperity, we also believe that there be mechanisms that provide safety nets.

The Nordic nations have model systems. Unfortunately, it does not translate here well because there are too many that don't give a crap or only give a crap to their own kind.
