I haven't given this much thought but off the top of my head I'd suggest it could open up a can of worms with spouse visas.

It could also encourage welfare rorting with benefits being paid to multiple partners/wives. (However, a quick google search found that this could be happening regardless).

So just change the eligibility for handouts. Nobody likes dole bludgers, no matter if you are from the right or left of politics.

Didnt the ATO specifically not want to crack down on multiple spouses cos the single mothers benefit was more?

Of course there is racism .... no different to the rest of the world .... when the aliens attack we will all come together

HJ already said that the Lizard People are in Atlantis or something. Should we be worried ?

Easy, you need to sponsor him/her and are required to finance their reasonable living expenses.

So you don't think there's a significant risk of people who want to come into the country paying a guy to become their husband and sponsor with an understanding that they will not have to finance living expenses?

Or is polygamy your response to Australia's immigration policy?

I challenge anyone to say they have not said something racist in their life. Whether that be pointing out a stereotype or actively hating on a race in the heat of a moment.

There are certainly fundamentally racist people in this country, i know many of them, doesn't make the entire country racist otherwise Pauline Hanson would already be the leader of the country!

Hmm. Visas which involve sponsorship mean that they do not get welfare or medicare.

Also the Immigration Dept actively monitor the relationship and if they get the smell of a scam they cancel the visa and deport. Even if there was a legit relationship and it breaks down then she must leave.

A friend of mine worked in Shanghai and tried to bring his fiance over. Immigration were all over them for years and years making sure that it was not a scam.

Anyway there could be separate rules for polygamy relationships. Perhaps spousal visas are limited to one each. LOL.

That's a fair enough response (except for the derp, that was lame).

In any case, from all definitions I've found marriage refers to two people. If someone makes a choice to have multiple partners then they are free to do so. They just can't marry them all.

I've provided multiple reasons against polygamy as you asked. Can you give me any reasons for changing the law?

My reason for not opposing it at this stage is that I have not heard a compelling argument against it.

That does not mean that it sits 100% comfortable with me, however I am prepared to listen and reflect upon it with an open mind.

Well what would be the purpose of marriage as a concept and legal status?

We'd may as well do away with marriage altogether.

Well yeah. Last census has 25% being de facto of all people living as "socially married". The stats are rising.

Perhaps it's in line with the decreasing attachment to the church ?

It could also be in line with the increasing cost of housing (and living in general), where couples are cohabiting and choosing to dedicate their finances to the cost of entering the housing market v the cost of getting married.
These couples are therefore classed as de facto in the census.
