$360m a year is a lot to catch up when all of a sudden you have to pay commentators, cameramen, producers, etc etc just to have the games available to watch. Because ATM that's pretty much what it is for NRL $1.8b for next to no outlay of their own.The NRL are already looking at moving beyond FOX and FTA. As 84 said, at present the loss of revenue from 9 is the biggest hurdle but other bidders with different methods have started nibbling already, so if the NRL can't find a way to do it themselves then they will have other options. The only thing will be whether they stack up against 9 (I would say FOX is gone) and how much 9 are willing to bump their offer to compete.
Honestly I think Nein will control it going forward to the point where Fox just won't bother. Nein will probably even take leaf out of radio's book and centralise their commentary team. They would at least spread it out over their signal so every game will be live somewhere on their channels. Still not HD though probably.
I think they'll further their partnership with Telstra though to improve the online availability due to NBN, platforms and all that
