The NRL are already looking at moving beyond FOX and FTA. As 84 said, at present the loss of revenue from 9 is the biggest hurdle but other bidders with different methods have started nibbling already, so if the NRL can't find a way to do it themselves then they will have other options. The only thing will be whether they stack up against 9 (I would say FOX is gone) and how much 9 are willing to bump their offer to compete.
$360m a year is a lot to catch up when all of a sudden you have to pay commentators, cameramen, producers, etc etc just to have the games available to watch. Because ATM that's pretty much what it is for NRL $1.8b for next to no outlay of their own.
Honestly I think Nein will control it going forward to the point where Fox just won't bother. Nein will probably even take leaf out of radio's book and centralise their commentary team. They would at least spread it out over their signal so every game will be live somewhere on their channels. Still not HD though probably.
I think they'll further their partnership with Telstra though to improve the online availability due to NBN, platforms and all that

The foxtel content is old and infrequently updated. If you like drama, Netflix Stan Prime shit all over it for a fraction of the price. Their standard package channels like reality tv and fox8 rubbish are not my demographic.

Documentaries are good but so are fta on demand netflix etc.

Foxtel = dodo.

I have free access to Netflix and still barely watch it. Severely overrated.

I noticed that SBS have a 2nd HD channel now. Something about mpeg2 vs mpeg4 and new compression technologies.

Anyway I expect that the commercial channels to do the same soon

The good thing about Netflix is once you've watched what you want, you just turn it off for however it takes for them to get more stuff you want to watch. Not locked in to ridiculous contracts. Foxtel's current offering it that regard is pretty balls, understandably though. If they want to retain their customers though, online service will be where they do it

I do illegally download on tv show - Game of Thrones. The only way to watch it in Australia is to have Foxtel. I'm not paying for Foxtel just for one tv show.
Not so... You can get it for free if you really want to without illegally downloading....

And that's fine for them. But I don't get the NRL on Netflix. I don't get the super rugby, or the overseas cricket, hockey and soccer and other various US and European sports, and unless I'm on holidays I'm not going to watch sports on six hundred apps on a tablet. I download the shows I really want to watch, and I don't get random docos on Netflix without specifically searching for them, so it's pretty useless to me as a mind relaxant when I'm studying....especially as I'll probably be using that same device I'm studying on for Netflix.

Netflix might be better for some, good for them. But it's severely overrated. I'll watch it when I'm on holiday somewhere or if I'm just vegging on the couch, but it's supplementary and nothing more.

Yeh, that's basically the attraction of Foxtel for me. I have Netflix as well though (and an effective geo-dodging routine.....which I don't usually activate).

We have Netflix. I haven't seen a lot that excites me.

Fox is superior for the things I like watching - news, golf, NBA and nrl.

If there's some amazing new platform that makes viewing all of that shit easier and cheaper then I'll jump over eventually. But I'll still probably be one of the last people in the country to take it up.

I agree. All the streaming providers have just created a big f**king mess ... i dont want to subscribe to a dozen separate things and have to watch half of em on some pissy little screen

I canned fox 2 months ago as once the footy finished I realised I never watched it. Given the new job with different work hours, netflix, hulu and amazon prime I just didn't need it. I do however use the foxtel go app on my phone and cast it to the tv for when I want to watch the footy

Yeah you need a smart Tv to cast it. Of course, you can just connect a HDMI cable to the laptop/PC if that's what you use....

Figured. I haven't had a PC in years and haven't got round to replacing the laptop that died about 6 months ago. Just been getting by with a phone and tablet, but no HDMI slot obviously. I suppose you could do it with an Android box?
