Well I've done it. Cancelled my Foxtel connection.

Overrated and poor value.

We were paying $129/m so Dad could watch the footy. Kids these days don't watch tv. They watch on demand content. Such a waste.

So I watch NRL on a iPad, which I have been trailing for a few weeks. I don't mind it and the quality is pretty good.

As for content, we have free to air tv. On demand programming from sbs 2 7 9 & 10 via their apps on my android tv.

I have a have a 1tb pvr to record free to air stuff.

I subscribe to Netflix Stan and Amazon Prime.

Amazon costs me $2.99 pm for the first 6 months then $5.99pm. FMD Foxtel did you hear that ?

Sorry Foxtel but you're a dinosaur facing the ice age.

I reckon next tv deal the nrl will go the NFL way and they will retain their content. Maybe sell a few games a week as per NFL do with ESPN etc.

I did the same just over a year ago.
Don't miss foxtel at all. Only used it for the footy anyway, and all the shows on the new NRL channel are all shit anyway.

I hope the NRL does retain their own content from the next tv deal. The NFL is a very smart business, and the NRL would be wise to follow in their footsteps.

Thanks, guys. Appreciate the advice.

I've been pondering whether to move from Sydney for a while, and the fiancee has been asking me to move for years, so I thought I'd test the waters first.

Renting is a very smart idea - I hadn't considered that. That's a great idea!

We've been on the Gold Coast the last week for a holiday, and we actually went to see some properties around the Gold Coast and its surrounding suburbs - we saw a 5 bedroom, 3 bathroom, double garage home (with a pool, backyard, and patio with pergola) in Pimpama for about $525k. Our jaws dropped when we saw the place, and the price. It's 20 minutes from the beach (I'm not fussed, but future Mrs Eele lives for the beach!), 20 minutes from the theme parks, and a short drive to the CBD (it's even driving distance to Brisbane).

Never thought I'd leave Sydney - especially for Queensland - but I have to say, it's mighty tempting...

Do you really need a house that big though?
Don't go beyond what you really need. I know it would be tempting to buy somehoreally big just because you think you can afford it, but going for something a bit smaller, while still comfortable for you and you family, it will be cheaper and much easier to pay off.

The faster you get out of debt, the better.

How do you know the shows are shit if you don't have fox anymore?

Definitely don't need 5 bedrooms, but the price was astounding!

NRL 360, Sterlo, Matty Johns have all been on there for a while. There are only a couple of new shows to add to those now.
I do still have friends and family who have Foxtel as well. I have a look when I'm at their houses.
The all-female show doesn't seem too bad. Has some merit and could be very good in time. The all-QLDer show should be burned with copious amounts of fire.

seems a likely story, does your wife keep changing the radio station in your car too?

Hey Eele, I started a thread in the "Go ahead ask us anything section" a while back as me and the family were looking at shifting to SE QLD... We didn't end doing it, yet, but there's some good advice from people in there Re good places to buy, job prospects etc etc... Check it out.

But agree with Josh, don't let go of any property in Sydney until you're absolutely sure you won't be coming back...even then, hold in to it if possible!

I don't think the money is there for the NRL to retain it. Theyd struggle to leverage their own broadcast even with direct advertising and subscription revenue. NFL and MLB (they even do it for minor leagues) can do it because they are small economies unto themselves but NBA and I think EPL don't even do it. They may go away from Fox but then they'll still be relying on Nein to broadcast. Unless Forty wants to the rounds with his gear each week

I dumped Foxtel over 3 years ago. Don't miss it apart from NRL games. I figure we spent almost 20k on Foxtel over the years. I have better things to spend my hard earned on.
I ditched it nearly a year ago, only miss the NRL and so signed up for the NRL App this year.... $3 a week as opposed to $30 a week to watch footy between the 2 outlets... I've got no complaints with the NRL App tbh... if anything it frees up the TV for the kids/wife to watch something when I'm watching the footy on the iPad

Can you watch replays of games with the nrl thing?

About a month ago I rang Foxtel and told them I wanted to downgrade my subscription to sports + Entertainment. After a short discussion they gave me my existing package at the price of the cheaper one for the next 6 months, with no obligation to continue the more expensive package at the end.

After the 6 months just say ok I'll keep my original package then turnaround before the next payment and ask them to downgrade again

Yeah the Foxtel girls tried to talk me into a reduced deal with sport free, but the the result was still a ripoff.

Irreconcilable differences.
