I'm not actually outraged. I find the idea of incest as revolting as homosexuality but they're not exactly hurting anyone. Why is it illegal?

Yes I hear you. It is purely a social impediment which blocks the marriage of adopted siblings. There are legal consequences of course bc once adoption is formalized, the adopted siblings are brother and sister at law. So I get the legal minefield that it creates.

I fully understand that the concept of homosexual sex might make people uneasy. However it is not an illegal act in this country and the plebiscite is not about that. It's about if they can get married. Oh are you saying that NO voters are just sending a social message of their disapproval of homosexuals in general ? I get it now, thanks.

Interracial marriages were illegal once and even in the 1960's in some US states. There was no real reason for it to be illegal other than a social taboo. Merkins used to argue that:

Why do you think homosexuality was ever illegal or considered a mental illness to start with? It's easy to say "Oh religion..." but religion was invented by people. Why did religions that stigmatise homosexuality gain traction over religions that let merkins f**k/marry whomsoever they like? It is quite obviously something that disturbs a lot of people at a fundamental level. Even those who support gay marriage.

Well just like it once sounded fine to plenty of people it still sounds fine to some of them. Where we live safe, comfortable middle-class lives we come into contact with safe, comfortable middle-class ethnics. But people from impoverished communities the world over (including in the city you live in) the desperate, ignorant, aggressive people living there come into contact with desparate, ignorant aggressive ethnics. Don't think their experience if multiculturalism is ever going to match yours. So don't moralise from a position of ignorance.
