There are two legitimate sides to this argument and that idea frustrates a true believer like yourself.

The gun laws in the states are a joke but this is easily as big a problem as access. Mental health treatment over there is an absolute farce in many ways. Not sure how true it is in this case but you've gotta be unhinged in some way to gun down a bunch of people so...

Distrust leads to people feeling threatened. A lack of perceived safety leads to an arms race. Americans with guns won’t give them up willingly because they would be left feeling vulnerable.
