The soil in my yard is fantastic. Best I've ever had. And Springwood weather is perfect - not too hot, not too cold.

I prepare the soil with mushroom compost and chicken manure a month before planting and then all I do afterwards is water. Yes, I use urine at the beginning of planting.

Yes, I've got some bugs, so I'll be planting marigolds and basil when I next clean out the garden.

Growth is fantastic. Turnips bigger than my fist, radishes bigger than Morgzilla, bok choy that just flourishes.

My main issue now will be planting in such a way that I have a regular harvest, so I can continually go and pick from the garden each day. At the moment I'm probably over planting and having to give some away sometimes, not having anything for myself at others. I'll fix that with the next rotation.

I'm pretty damned happy with it. Everything is growing fantastically and it's amazing to pick straight from my backyard.

I will give you a tip. Plants basil radomly through garden. It helps keep away insects.
Looks like somethings eating your leaves.

Hindy his veggie leaves look like my basil leaves. Tiny green slugs attack periodically. I can pull a dozen off (Casper is giggling right now) over 3 days. Plant recovers but is out of action for a while. Any ideas? Mealy bug on the Rosemary is giving me the shiznizzle too.

I've only a north facing balcony to grow on so I settle for herbs in pots. And I'm a beginner.

Get that stuff that kills snails. No more slugs.

Yeah snail pellets will get rid of some but wont help you with insects. Companion planting like basil garlic chives etc will help a bit. There are also organic solutions like making a garlic based spray. My spinach and rocket are full of holes. We still eat it.

Possums however are a massive pain. I had to cover the entire patch with bird netting. Motherf**kers.

Yep. Possums are painful. I had one so brazen he'd let me watch him eat from the other side of the glass door. I was told chilli spray would work. No chance. The bastard ate my chilli plant!

Is there a legitimate reason for school zones to still be in operation? Apart from all that lovely money I mean.
I heard on the radio last week that the "official" end of school term is Tuesday Dec 19... supposedly teachers are still on duty doing year end wrap up activities and we all know that they need help crossing the road so there's a very good reason for the 40km/h speed limits still being enfornced....

Yeah but you're a beer snob. I can quite happily drink VB. And if I can make it, or better, with f**k all effort then great. All grain sounds like work.

I just wanna brew beer that's about as good as the stuff I usually buy, which isn't craft beer. And for less than it would cost to buy. And with minimal effort. I'm hoping that by paying attention to temperature control and sanitation that it's possible. Maybe I'm dreaming but plenty of people claim it's achievable. And even if it's not I'll still get drunk trying.

If you're trying to home brew something the equivalent of a mainstream beer (VB, Carlton, Tooheys, etc.) you will never come even remotely close with basic equipment. To start with mainstream beers are all Lagers and you'd actually be currently brewing Ales. Even if it says "Lager" on the tin, you're essentially still brewing an Ale because you need to bottom ferment lagers at a very low temperature. A temperature that I can't even get a brew to in Canberra in the middle of winter.

In winter I like drinking Coopers Pale Ale. What’s something new and refreshing for the summer months. Anything new come out recently that I should try? I’m assuming it will be some kind of lager.

Summer Ale's are all the rage for this time of year. I actually prefer them all year round.

Cricketers Arms make a beer called a Scorcher Summer Ale. Give it a try on tap somewhere.

I ham it up a bit on here, but I can happily drink VB as well. I'm not always quaffing Triple IPAs.

Most home brew from a tin that I have tried isn't even as good as VB. Its just shit and a waste of time. The stuff that I made was f**ken horrendous.

I started doing partial grain and the improvements were amazing.

How quickly before you started drinking the beer though? A home brew beer will generally be rubbish until about the 6 weeks mark, sometimes 8 depending on the style. Ciders you can get into pretty quickly though.

I left them until the 6 week mark or further. They still weren't great. All of the components were there but it lacked the body that can be gained by using more hops in the boil and the aroma and taste that dry hopping imparts.

There is a big difference between tin and all grain.
