Article 80 has the sentences that apply, and death, life, 20years etc are all grouped together with no distinguishing thresholds.

Interestingly, the sentences include mention of "fines"... if you think of the reported request for "bribe" for a lesser sentence, perhaps it was just a slightly different form of what we'd call "plea bargaining"? Where instead of reducing the charges (as we'd do here) to elicit a guilty plea, someone over there says if you agree to pay a $130K fine as part of your sentence, we'll make it 20 years or life (rather than the maximum death penalty)?

That'd would still be a miscarriage of justice as your penalty is determinable by your ability to pay. At what severity of crime do the rich receive same punishment as poor?

Indeed, but at least the practice is enshrined upfront in their actual laws.

Here, the ability of the rich to squirm out of the same punishments as the poor is much more subtle, but still quite evident. For example any celebrity drink-driving case where they escape disqualification, but the average punter without the connections would not. Also that practice of references prior to sentencing (which recently came to light in the Luke Lazurus rape case) is a subtle way that inequalities between our country's social classes are reinforced through our justice system.

My mate's wife is going through pancreatic cancer. She is only 41. Such a devestating disease. They gave her 3 to 6 months in November last year. Puts shit into perspective.
