Nobody ever said that vaccines were perfect and would stop transmission of the virus completely. The data is in and they don't work 100%. Even if I am vaccinated there is a chance I will catch the virus.

However, if you don't have the vaccine the chances of you catching the disease are higher. The illness is likely to be more severe and you the chances you need hospital treatment and may die are also a lot higher. So what?

If you choose to be unvaccinated there are two things you do:

1. You increase the chance of the disease spreading because you are more likely to catch it. That is not good for the community;
2. You are more likely to use up a hospital bed for treatment because the symptoms are more severe. A hospital bed that could be used for somebody with a serious illness like cancer.

Think of it like this. If you had the vaccine you may not have needed hospital treatment when you caught the disease. Because you took up a hospital bed in intensive care, a road accident victim or cancer patient was unable to get the treatment they needed and died. This isn't hypothetical, it is actually happening. Here is a doctor talking about turning away patients

"On Aug. 3, I received a call from a hospital that does not have a cancer program. Such calls are routine at the regional referral center where I work. A doctor at the outlying hospital had a patient with metastatic brain cancer. She was unable to walk, and without urgent radiation treatments there was no hope for any meaningful recovery.

My hospital, one of the largest in central Florida, was full of covid patients, more than 90 percent of whom were unvaccinated. We had no beds available. We had paused elective surgeries the previous week and have been trying to control the influx of patients. Our emergency department had a 12-hour wait that day. But I had no choice. For the first time in my career, I had to say no.
" Nitesh N. Paryani Washington Post article August 21 , 2021.

To me it is a simple choice. Get vaccinated and help the community by reducing the chance of getting the disease and the severity if you do get it, or don't get vaccinated and hope nobody dies because you used up a bed in intensive care. Or hope nobody dies because you caught the virus and gave it to somebody vulnerable.

So much discussion is about letting perfect be the enemy of good. The data is in from around the world and from millions of patients. No, vaccines aren't perfect, but they are pretty damn good and help the community. The fact they are not 100% effective is not a valid reason to be unvaccinated. They have helped our medical system cope and without them there would be many more deaths.

Well said Pomoz. Well said.

Vaccination is like wearing a seat belt when in a car. If you have an accident it hopefully saves you from serious injuey. Vaccination works the same way.

The issue is though IF you have underlying health conditions, you may still get seriously ill and or die (even with vaccination) To be honest that is the kicker in it all.

Why am I so pro vaccination, basically because I'm selfish and don't want to die just yet. I've got a lot of life I still want to live.

Others being vaccinated helps stop the spread of covid.......because as I said earlier if you are aged or have chronic illness covid may still cause great harm even with vaccination.

PS My tongue was in my cheek about refusing non vaccinated folks care........

I wish though that all folks would get vaccinated for the greater good of everybody.

The seatbelt analogy is off. A closer one would be a 30 year old average Joe Blow taking a hit up running straight at Nigel Plum, v a 90 year old doing it.

I actually think the seat belt analogy is quite a good one.

A new car with a five star ancap rating doesn’t automatically ensure you will survive a significant car crash but it enhances your chances. That is what the vaccines are all about, just offering a better outcome. Who doesn’t want that.

Also children have died from COVID. I believe the youngest was a eight week old baby.

And try telling the families of the 24 vaxxed/boosted individuals who died that the COVID vaccine works…..
How many deaths do you think there may have been without any vaccine.

Ask yourself, do you honestly believe we would have a lower
death rate overall without the available vaccines?

Serious question?

I’m not really a fan of tennis but I so hope Ash Barty can get the job done this evening.

Its been over forty years since we had a female champion of our own grand slam and no one deserves such an honour more than Ash Barty.

It won’t be easy, the American challenger is a dangerous big hitting opponent. Fingers crossed for Ash.
I wish any of our three premiership wins had been half as easy as that was. Neither of them grunted which I found enjoyable. The blokes made up for them though. This Barty is some player. Like Martina Hingis, only better. Does it all with finesse.

Seriousness of your question noted. I honestly don’t know. And I guess we’ll never know…

It really doesn’t matter what your beliefs are we have to move on one way or the other.

Open up our borders, let’s just return to some semblance of normality.

The WA Premier last week changed the border restrictions and 20,000 individuals were compromised as a consequence and that was just one week.

The Qantas CEO said today the uncertainty around our international borders reopening to international tourists is costing potentially millions if dollars.

Seriously we have to look at the big picture and treat Covid like the flu. We just can’t go on living in fear, the way we are doing.
