Non panther games

This is what I hate about this finals system. Even though we were clearly the best team all year, and the Storm clearly the second best, there’s now a chance we’ll play in the preliminary final instead of the GF. The old system provided a better chance of 1v2 in the GF.

I can't remember the old format, please, explain? Thanks.

The old system was confusing week 1, but it gave more of an advantage to the top 2 teams.

week 1 was

1v8
2v7
3v6
4v5

two lowest ranked losers got eliminated. Two highest ranked winners go through to week 3.

The advantage for the top two teams is they get to play the bottom two, giving a genuine reward for being the best teams all season.

I thought so, and thanks again.

Yep agree, the top 2 teams should be advantaged.

Better to have a hard game then a week off to be ready for that two week run. Panthers haven't been tested in months.

We needed a game like last night. We were against the wall, against a battle harden team, who have had help.

Yeah, but the point is we could’ve more easily lost last night.

I’d rather have an easy game and make week 3, than a tough game and lose. A tough game & winning might be the overall preferred option, but you’re reducing your chances of making week 3 and having a week off.

Since we got rid of the McIntyre system, 1v2 has only happened in the GF twice.

Of course. On a personal level I'm with you. I dont know that that's the level the administrators should be thinking on though.

I think there’s a strong argument for it on a non personal level as well. Giving more reward for the top 2 teams gives more credence to the regular season.

Currently I don’t think there’s enough of a reward for the minor premiership.

I think we will go all the way.

Yeah. Theres definitely an argument there. I think generally speaking the rewards are more equitably distributed in the old system (not just for #1) which is its best attribute. Still I think the new system on balance offers more pros than cons.

Along with the quality of matches, I think there's benefits to providing a strong incentive to finish in the top 4. That means more competetive matches in the last rounds of the regular season which improves the integrity of the competition. Its a lot easier to understand as well which is underrated as an issue imo.

I'd be fine with either system though. I was fine with the old one when it was in place. Its just about understanding that they each have trade offs.

Sure we'd make week 3 easier then run the risk of being the Sharks of the top 4 just making up the numbers. As a fan I'd much rather get that lesson week one when there's a second chance than get knocked out week 3. We all saw the Panthers get caught out by the occasion of finals football against a strong team. Playing the Sharks and winning by 30 or 40 would be a huge disservice.

Also the fact no team outside the top 4 has won in the NRL era seems to suggest there is enough advantage already.

I do agree the minor premiership needs more appreciation though.
